Here is a link to the actual 6-8 common core standards in social studies
How do those differ from previous standards?

One of hone best history professors I ever had at LSU was Gaines Foster. In his course the new south he routinely has us read two books back to back that discussed the same events and time period from vastly different perspectives. I found that to be a very effective method to show that depending on your place in said events, the interpretation could be very different.

History is not a collection of facts or dates, history is a telling of events and being able to critically examine the author's interpretation is key to understanding the events.

Previous standards were called grade level expectations and focused on what material to cover. In fact in Louisiana the grade level expectations for social studies and science are still in force and the common core literacy standards are to be addressed in addition to the grade level expectations.

The new standards focus on a students ability to use various texts and various authors to examine the different perspectives of the same events

I agree with that statement, and that does give one more balance and the individual the chance to understand why history unfolded the way it did, when it's balanced.

I agree totally. It will come down to teachers and principals selecting proper materials to produce that critical thinking and balance. Taking the easy way out and just buying a textbook that purports to be common core aligned will cause lots of problems. Texts are written for Cali, fla, and Texas
You have to carefully review materials to try and avoid shite like what was posted earlier

Not saying it's untrue, but there's no real way to confirm that this report is accurate.

But you can confirm that this report is inaccurate, since there are no social studies common core standards.

Presentation of BS placed on par with fact is EXACTLY what evolutionists rightly rail against in science curricula.

First of all the linked text is not a required text and secondly are the facts presented in that book inaccurate? I don't know because I haven't read it and I assume you haven't either. What I am talking about is understanding that the sharecroppers of the delta may have a different view of the 1927 Mississippi flood than the plantation owners. It's about perspective. Both views have merit and both views need to be understood. The fact is the river flooded. The impacts were different for different groups that were affected

Fact. Also those arms did not have interchangeable parts at the time of the signing.

You assume incorrectly.

Actually, the linked text is a required text if you happen to attend a school requiring it . . . requiring it under auspices of COMMON CORE's promotion of "varying perspectives".

Taking a history class in college is much different from taking history in sixth grade. This worksheet doesn't cite any academic source, it doesn't present a counter perspective, it simply presents an historically inaccurate opinion as fact.

Read through the federalist papers and Madison's personal writings. It is clear that the intent of the Second Amendment goes well beyond to formation and arming of militias (and not just state militias as presented in the worksheet.)

quote:

History is not a collection of facts or dates, history is a telling of events and being able to critically examine the author's interpretation is key to understanding the events.

Then the sixth graders should examine Madison's intent because it is vastly different than what is presented here.

Common Core is bacon-wrapped shite. The idea of skill-based standards isn't the problem. The problem is that the approved texts are loaded with agenda-driven bullshite.

It's just another reason to have your children educated by someone other than the government.

This isn't Common Core doing this, it's crappy text book writers and crappy teachers. Common Core doesn't make the curriculum, nor does it tell the teachers how to teach beyond telling them what information (generally) should be included in lessons.

Before Common Core, all states had GLEs which are essentially the same thing only not standardized.

Was that not a valid political concern about a potential presidential candidate?
