Carlos Santana will be Indians' third baseman Indians manager Terry Francona said Tuesday that Carlos Santana will be the club's third baseman. Francona also said that it will not be a platoon situation with Lonnie Chisenhall, so it appears that Santana will get most of the playing time there, at least initially. He'll also serve as the backup catcher to Yan Gomes, who only figures to gain more momentum in fantasy leagues with this news. Chisenhall will likely start at third base when Santana catches, but will otherwise receives at-bats as the designated hitter or as a pinch-hitter. The 3B eligibility will be a nice boost to a roster.

Eh, if anything hopefully it will boost his at bats above normal C levels. He loses his value if you play him at third.

Gomes definitely jumps in value.

His versatility only increases his value, not diminishing it. He was already a 20 pop bat which is sufficient power at 3rd.

This is fantasy baseball. If he's a crappy fielding 3rd baseman, it doesn't really matter.

his ABs have always been above most catcher levels because he can play 1B or DH too

he's still a viable 3B option, Pablo Sandoval ish. But i agree id rather keep him at catcher, his value is higher there

Actually he's a pretty decent fielder with a good arm. He played in one of those Central American leagues and looked really good at 3rd. Fantasy wise, top 3 C and top 7 3rd.

I won't play him primarily at third, but the 3B eligibility will only increase his value for me for roster flexibility.

I am obviously not saying extra position eligibilty hurts a player. It has nothing to do with his fielding. Last year there were 8 3B's that had more HR's than any catcher. 20 HR's at 3B puts Santana in the bottom third of a 12-team league starters not to mention he falls in the same place in RBI's and R's. His value lies at C.

Just as I am not going to play Mauer at 1B, I am not going to play Santana at 3rd. If I am, it likely means I have a bad corner sacker and then what is deeper on the waiver wire, 3B(1B) or C?

I don't disagree.

I took your statement a different way and now I see what you meant.
