Didn't see a thread, SIAP.

He referred to Russia as a regional power, operating from a position of weakness as opposed to strength.

Thoughts?

ETA: I love downvotes on discussion threads. No opinion posted, but Obama's mentioned = downvote.

This board is fun.

Pretty sure that's accurate, since it's considered that the US is the only superpower in the world right now.

I agree. Would they have done this had things gone well for them in Kiev? Doubt they would have done it at this time otherwise.

What do you expect it's Obama? Just another example of why it's pointless to listen to anything he has to say.

So Russia has no influence beyond the slavic areas? Syria blushes in the corner and is embarrassed for you.

Yep. It's pretty weak to thumb your nose at the West, the U.N. and a neighboring country and do exactly what you want.

They are a regional power. Having ICBMs makes them a military superpower but they are weak economically thus the true reason they are exerting military force, in order to control resources to boost their economy. Obamas statement is somewhat true if used in this regard but he needs to elaborate a little more because Russia is not weak militarily

You have to watch out for those weak regional powers with 8700 nuclear warheads.

What happens when Putin gets a foothold in South America? Is he still a regional power with the weakness?

We are going to have to deal with Russia. The eighties are calling about their foreign policy.

I'd say he's wrong.. Not a superpower but much much more than regional.

I can't see how it's weak to respond to losing your puppet by taking over what you really wanted anyway and have no one do anything substantial at this point in response.

Huh? What does the fact that Obama is full of it have to do with me?

There is a lot of truth in this statement. Our CinC doesn't seem to understand that Russia being "weak" while invading the Ukraine does not make him and by extension the US look better in the matter. The fact that a weak regional power is able to do as it pleases against the stated desires and wishes of our Administration makes us look worse.

This is another one of those moments like the "heard about it in the news" bits that Obama seems to think exonerates him while in reality it makes him look even less competent and less in charge.

I hate moments like this. It is embarrassing to see my POTUS (I did not vote for him, but he is still our President) look like a gd clown.

None of what Obama said makes sense. Russia is not only a regional power, even if it were it has designs and the capability to become much more than that.

What is "weak" about what they did? They defied the wishes and mocked the sanctions of Europe and the US, and they're better off. I doubt there will be anymore repercussions.

Obama was talking out of his arse because he didn't want to admit Romney was right.

Technically accurate just their region is Asia and Europe. With Russia supplying 40%+ of Europe's nat gas they have a hell of a lot of sway.

They also are one of less than a handful with ICBM capabilities so they may be regional but their reach is extraordinary.

Weak? Yeah, because to Obama real strength lies in walking away from a fight or being able to talk your feelings out.

Its kinda like Russia is being the neighborhood bully that exerts force when it is obvious that nobody likes the mofo and doesn't want to be associated with them. So they resort to the lowest common denominator when it comes to relations with its neighbors, since they have nothing else to offer.

I believe that is the weakness Obama is referring to. Essentially, this is the history of Russia over the past 100 years.

What does it make your country look like if you sign off on helping a sovereign nation maintain its borders and then bail once they get invaded? Strong or weak?

Romney kicked his arse in the debates.

And is still kicking his arse in terms of correct political instincts.

All Obama has is immunity from the truth, a vast bloc of ignorant voters, and a fawning media to run interference for him and to keep the misinformed that way.

This is not a unique situation for the U.S. In the 50's Eisenhower encouraged discontent in Hungary and other eastern block nations. A revolt ensued and the Soviets ended up killing 3,000 Hungarians. What did the U.S. do? Nothing.

Uh, no. Putin has eyes on South America and Cuba. Have you heard of the Monroe Doctrine? Under Obama it's gone. Putin will keep pushing someone stops him. You think Obama will?

Maybe Obama will come up with something about as good as Iran-Contra to stop them in the Americas.
