What are the best varieties of Tomatoes and Bell Peppers that can be found ready to plant in Baton Rouge. Please provide names of vendors that carry these plants.

Better Boy produces large quantities.
Cherokee Purple probably has the best taste.

Better Bush, Celebrity, Early Girl, and Better Boy all make pretty well and are easy to grow. They are decent eating (for a backyard tomato, still 100x better than a store-bought tomato). You should be able to find them at almost any place that sells plants. If you are just starting out, don't mess with heirloom varieties. They can be finicky, and most require an increased level of effort in required care.
I plant whatever varieties (meaning I buy a couple of every variety available) at my local Cleggs. They vary from year to year, but they all end up making about the same for some reason. I had some Gypsy Peppers one year that were really good, and probably the best tasting sweet pepper I've ever grown. They are small, but are delicious. Plant a bunch of different ones. You can freeze whatever you don't eat for later. Good luck.

Just planted a few husky grape, better boy, and creole plants yesterday. Hope they take well. Also planted red and green sweet pepper plants as well.
I'd refer to the LSUAG tomato guide for the best varieties to grow.

Walmart, $1.77 for 4 pack. At that price, pick one of everything, grow it for yourself and narrow your selection down next year based on your own personal experience.

FYI- Naylor's has a huge variety. We were there on Sunday and I counted 50 varieties of tomatoes. I think they grow a lot of their plants onsite...

I've found this is the best strategy for any seed. If the local store is carrying it, odds are they are getting it local and it is pretty well acclimated to your area. Made a night and day difference in my yellow squash.

IMHO, By far Creole are the best for taste and they produce when it's gets too hot for other varities. Should be able to find them in BR pretty common. I used to buy them there and then plant them in East Texas. THINK I'll come down for a game and get some soon.

Easiest to grow would be a bush variety. I buy mine from a farmer who does it commercialy. He calls them field bush tomatoes and they really well. I'm sure that's nit the real name of them though.
