Is it OK to exercise when you are having cold/flu symptoms? In other words, will it make the sickness worse or prolong recovery? TIA

Listen to your body. I found that more often than not it was best to make it a rest day. Recovery is as important if not more so than the workout.

Yeah, I wouldn't do that. I hate it when I see people who are clearly sick going from machine to machine. I was thinking about either going for a run or doing P90X or Insanity.

We talking about just something like sinus congestion here? Or is this full-on flu? With just sinus congestion of head-cold stuff, I've found it nice to do some light exercising. I feel like it gets things flowing up there, and at least it gets my mind off of how uncomfortable it is. I'm just talking about going for a walk or some light yard work....

If it's something worse, or the flu, stay your arse in bed.

Fever - no.

Just a head cold, listen to your body. If you start your workout and just don't have the spirit to contiue, stop. If you seem to be ok, go for it.

I've actually gone on a 75 mile bike ride with a cold, felt like shite at the start, and by the end, I swear I killed the cold.

I used to try and excercise with symptoms below the neck but all it does is prolong symptoms and use a majority of your body's energy away from repair on the immune system.

Better in the long run to take 2-3 full days off rather than have a few half arse workouts with a week longer sickness.

The most ill do is the P90x stretch routine. You really want your body's energy to be available for healing.

Last time I had flu like symptoms (body aches, fever, etc.) I actually felt better while I was exercising. Of course, I went straight back to feeling like garbage after I cooled down.

I was all stuffy from a bad head cold in the fall, but I was in a pretty good running routine. I had taken 3 days off, but it was a nice day and I wanted to get a quick run in, and I told myself I'd limit it to a 10 min/mile pace and only run a couple of miles. 40 minutes and almost 4.5 miles later, I was feeling awesome. Sure, the first 10 minutes sucked when all of the stuff in my head was coming out and I was hocking loogies everywhere, but it got it all flowing and cleared me up. Then a nice hot shower and back to work. Woke up the next morning and the cold was gone.
