BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) – Jim Kelly and his family are in New York City as the Hall of Fame quarterback is preparing to undergo surgery for his cancer recurrence.

Kelly is said to be weak and “in bad shape.” He’s been in and out of hospitals for the past 10 days, but News 4 has learned that Kelly is scheduled to have surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital in Manhattan on Thursday because doctors wanted to see him immediately.

Does not sound good. Always liked him. When the USFL was going, the Houston Gamblers had their first summer practice in my hometown of Huntsville. One of my jr high coaches was trying out as kicker, so I got to go to the practices a few times. I remember Kelly yelling in this gravely voice to the receivers, chewing their arse for running the wrong route.

hope he pulls through. one of my favorites growing up, and seems to be the type of man you wouldn't mind your own child emulating.

I hope he survives, but the impression I get in most articles i've read on this, is it's bad, it has spread, and he'll be really lucky to survive it.

I always hated the Bills when i was a kid but JK always seemed like a stand up guy that never let the fame get to him. Sad story

I can't see the pic at work, but quality of life has to be horrible for him right now. I'd just want them to make me as comfortable as possible.

Well this is terrible news. Jim Kelly is a classy guy and a great representative for the sport.

Hopefully he can pull through this.

How could you hate the Bills even when they were winning?

Third world countries loved the bills for all of the free t-shirts they provided for four years straight.

Horrible news.
I grew up in NOLA but was a HUGE Bills fan starting in 1987 until basically Jim retired. Guy was my idol growing up.

Cool story about him - my fiance grew up in Florida and her dad is a die-hard Dolphins fan. Her uncle (dad's brother) ended up dating a woman who had previously dated Jim Kelly. When her uncle told her what a huge Dolphins fan and Marino fan his brother was, she called Jim Kelly and he then contacted Marino and Marino ended up signing a boatload of stuff and sending it to her dad.

Pretty cool of him to help out his ex GF and some dude he's never even met just to get an autograph.

Heard on the radio today that they are not doing surgery and he's going to continue undergoing chemo. They said the cancer is in a place where it's not feasible to perform surgery. Doesn't sound good..
