Josey Baker takes his toast seriously. But that’s only because, first and foremost, he is a baker. (And, yes, Baker is his real last name.) When I called him to talk about his bread and, consequently, the wildly popular toast at The Mill—the San Francisco establishment he co-runs with FourBarrel Coffee—he spoke with as much enthusiasm as a kid talking about his brand-new bicycle. “There’s plenty of people doing toast now, [but] most of them aren’t making the bread themselves,” he said. “It’s a really critical piece of the puzzle as far as we’re concerned.” And while The Mill was not the first to create a thick-sliced, Nutella-topped piece of artisanal toast, Baker and his crew have certainly perfected the art. The one caveat? The thing some people can’t get over? That coveted slice can run you upwards of $4.

I've never been to San Francisco, but I've heard it was expensive as hell to live. Damn, $4 for just toast is ridiculous.

It's artisanal toast though. That makes it special.

Is retarded. But then again, so is $8 for a cup of coffee.

If someone is willing to pay that then good for him.

Start a price war and sell yours for the "cheap" price of $3.75.

I'm not validating the 4 bucks, as that seems a bit extreme, but SF is very renowned for their sourdoughs. A good sourdough is hard to put a price on, but if you were to afix a price, yeah, 4 bucks is a bit much.

Damn... You'd think in SF they'd put restrictions on the price of toast to make sure everyone can afford the artisan toast.

That's some nasty shite if you ask me, and a downer. An amazing sourdough that begins with a cherished starter recipe I would have less trouble with paying for than when you lather it with that crap.

He is only making around .35 a slice. The rest goes to the city through the "Bread Tax"

Hell, people pay around $2 for 16 ounces of water out of a vending machine and around $3 at a football game. Four dollars for a piece of toast sounds about right. It does make me question people's sanity that does this though.

A Rolls Royce is artisan

A Ford is mass produced
