So this girl comes to visit my roommate this weekend. She teaches elementary school at some shitty area near Bossier City (can't remember where).

Anyway, she said lots of her students use apostrophes in their names, but they all call them "comma to the top." I'd never heard this before and cracked up. Is this a common term?

I first heard that term as a medical student in 2003 when I asked a mom to spell her child's name that had an apostrophe in the spelling. I find it much funnier than La-a, probably because "comma to the top" actually has been said.
