Mark Cuban "NFL is ten years from implosion"
Posted by JBeam on 3/24/14 at 10:26 am00
quote:
"I think the NFL is 10 years away from an implosion," Cuban said Sunday evening when his pregame conversation with reporters, which covered a broad range of topics, swayed toward football. "I'm just telling you, pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered. And they're getting hoggy. Just watch. Pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered. When you try to take it too far, people turn the other way.
"I'm just telling you, when you've got a good thing and you get greedy, it always, always, always, always, always turns on you. That's rule number one of business."
Cuban's focal point is about the NFL's continuing reach at expanding their television rights, specifically in playing games on days other than Sunday or Monday.
"They're trying to take over every night of TV," Cuban said. "Initially, it'll be, 'Yeah, they're the biggest-rating thing that there is.' OK, Thursday, that's great, regardless of whether it impacts [the NBA] during that period when we cross over. Then if it gets Saturday, now you're impacting colleges. Now it's on four days a week.
quote:
Cuban's point is essentially a supply and demand issue. The NFL is the United States' most popular sport by a pretty wide margin, so the league is naturally trying to capitalize on it. With television ratings at all-time highs and league revenue through the roof, it also seems like smart business to try and keep growing the product.
The NFL reached a deal in February with CBS to simulcast games on Thursday with NFL Network. Meaning the NFL will have games next season on Sunday, Monday, Thursday and even Saturday late in the season. Cuban compared the tactic to Who Wants to Be a Millionaire, which declined in popularity after the show starting airing every weeknight.

Boxing, baseball and horse racing all once dominated at some point in time. All things do come to an end at some point or another.

Weren't they doing this back in the 80s and 90s too?

he would have been better off comparing it to the mcrib

it'll never take over Saturdays. he's an idiot for even thinking that it will. i'd venture to say that Saturday's ncaa ratings may be close to being better than Sunday's.

I was a goofy rant. He kept saying the same thing that he thought was pithy and profound (pigs get fat, hogs get slaughtered) over and over again.

I took that as him saying it won't, but that the NFL is dumb for thinking it will.
I am not agreeing with him, but I do think there is some truth in this.
While I don't think the NFL is going anywhere anytime soon, I believe the product is suffering in quality over the past several years as where it was consistently being improved from the 90's to the 00's.

The Thursday games are a bit ridiculous, but he's crazy.
This is football, not a stupid game show.

NFL won't be #1 forever, but it will be at least 20 years before that happens

The quality of play in the Thursday night games suck.....Would be completely satisfied with Sunday/Monday games with Saturday games late in the season.

Can't over expose your product. Part of the appeal of football is the one game a week.

I see his point. I think the NFL is getting ridiculous with these games on Thursday and Saturday. As a consumer I enjoy it, but with a game like football it's hard as hell on the players to not have as set of a schedule every week as possible. I know Thursday games won't go away, but honestly, I wouldn't mind it going back to just Sunday and Monday.
The only way they could really rectify the situation is if they gave teams with out of the normal day games, they give them a bye the week before. That way, you have about a week and a few days on each side of the Thursday game.

implosion is vastly overstated but i think this constant growth slows down quickly in a few years and you might even see some declines in revenue 10 years from now.

I don't really get what he's getting at. NFL is greedy and it will come back to bite them? Why exactly?
He is saying if they keep spreading to each night eventually it will over-saturate the market and cause people to grow tired of it.
