The wife has offered to buy me a nice grill for an upcoming birthday. I've narrowed down my choices to either the BGE or Primo XL, however I'm having a hard time finding very much of a difference between the two. After searching through some old food board threads, it sounds like the oval shape of the Primo is probably superior and it costs less. Of course, the BGE sounds like it might be better quality and have more options for accessories.

Anyone own either or both? Any pros or cons of either?

Eta: found price info

I have a primo XL and love it. Got it for less than the bge. Never used a bge but for the price and how close they are I went primo. I also like the fact it's oval...I'm guessing more room and better indirect cooking space.

I have had a BGE for about 10 years and it is still going strong. I can't comment on the Primo since it don't have one.

The BGE is very versitile in that I can smoke at a very low temp and sear a steak at a very hight temp. Loaded the right way, the max temp is in the 1100 F territory which is perfect for searing a steak.

I have smoked pork butts overnight for over 20 hours and can lay my head on the pillow knowing that my dialed in temp of 200 F will be steady and not go out.

I have been smoking my thanksgiving turkey on it for the entire time I have owned it and everyone loves how it comes out.

The greatest thing about the BGE is the number of on line communities that exist that can get you up to speed on the techniques you need to aquire to cook effectively on the egg.

Good luck with your purchase and happy birthday.

I think the primo does have more surface area, but using the place setter on the Egg, cooking indirect is a breeze and you can use the entire grill in indirect cooking.

I've researched the shite out of these things. Made in USA vs Mexico. More cooking area and supposed to be better service. I'd get the XL.

I think only only real difference between any of the top tier ceramics is shape and cooling area. It is my understanding that they all cook equably well.

You in Houston?

Yep that's what I found...they are both pretty much the same other than shape and where they are made. I still feel the oval shape is better. And the price I got it for made it a no brainer. So much so I'm getting a second one...

I have been known to have access to grills at very good prices, but you would have to travel to near Baton Rouge...

BGE or Primo XL?

I bought a once used, literally, Primo Oval XL for either $750 or $850 (can't remember) from Craiglist with many accessories included.

I can't comment on the BGE, don't have one, but I can't believe it gets much better than a Primo Oval XL. The grilling space is unbelievable.

It would have to be a pretty good deal to get me to take an 8 hour round trip. But I could be persuaded (or convince someone else to get it)
