Got a new laptop on the way and figured I'd grab up a good ole RTS since I enjoyed them so much in my younger days. I was a Command & Conquer guy along with some AoE. Sadly thats about as far as my knowledge goes on this genre.

Basically whats the best RTS thats fairly new

Thanks. just wondering but are there any games that take into account managing stuff not related to actual warfare (stocks, logistics, etc)

Not RTS but you may enjoy civilization games

Try starcraft or warcraft?

Starcraft was an idea floating around... A lot of my friends praise it

Company of Heroes is a really good RTS series that is newer. If you have never played Homeworld, I would suggest giving that a go if you can find a copy. Even though it is almost 15 years old, it is a really great game.

I like the Warhammer series too, but I would wait for a Steam sale for that one. You can pick up the bundle pretty cheap if you wait

Age of Empires II HD
Starcraft 2
Company of Heroes

My 3 personal favorites and arguably the 3 best RTS out there.

Honestly, you can't go wrong with any of the AOE series:

- Age of Mythology
- Rise of Nations
- Age of Empires III

The RTS genre is now extinct, unfortunately.

Other than Starcraft II, there really hasn't been a decent RTS in years.

You should give Company of Heroes a spin. It's such a totally different rts than your Starcraft/CnC. Focuses much more on strategy rather than resource gathering. Each faction has advantages. USA is much more infantry driven, where as the nazis have access to a more varied and powerful armored units. Focuses on securing strategic points to allow expansion of armies. Cut off the right point, your opponent can't train units. Veterancy is a big deal, as squads and units that rank up are more effective in combat, gives you an incentive to take care of your veteran units.

My poor PC is on its last leg, and I a have a hard time playing it now. But if you want a different take on the rts genre that doesn't involve build orders and resource managements, give it a try

Crusader Kings II, but I am using 'RTS' a little broadly.

Yeah, Age of Empire 2 is as phenomenal today as it was a decade ago when I first played it. (Just realized this game came out in 1999. I'm not sure its truly ever been topped.)

When I got bored of that Rise of Nations was a breath of fresh air.

Metal Fatigue brought a lot of fun to the genre too.

Ground Control 1 & 2 had great moments.

Warcraft III reminded me of following truely great story lines in a RTS.

World in Conflict had some fun things to explore.

Company of Heroes

I have been playing Company of Heroes 2 which is awesome.

Also, some independent strategy games have been taking up my time.

Prison Architect - I definitely nerd out on this one. In real life Ive been building correctional facilities for a few years now. Ive been attempting to re-create past facilities I've built since I left LSU.

Door Kickers - Cool assault type game. You can pre-plan the assault and watch your SWAT team execute the entire plan.

I started playing Settlers Online. Free RTS. Pretty good. Very slow, but designed that way. You can speed up progression but that will cost you resources, gold coin, or gems purchased with real money.

I take it slow. Relaxing game.
