The wife is looking for a minivan and found a pretty good deal on one with low miles.

I did a car fax and it showed a milage inconsistency. It went from 119k at one servicing to 102k at the next. I asked the dealer and he said that the gauge cluster had been replaced.

The for sale listing states that it has 106k miles. I asked how many miles does the van actually have and he says there is no way to know.

Can anyone tell me what the proper procedures are for replacing the cluster? Does the new one start with a mileage of zero? Or does it start where the old one left off?

They probably got a used cluster somewhere else.

Go to Dodge Forums in the caravan section there will be DIY info.

A brand new one starts with zero. A used one has whatever it comes with (most common)
You can get any set to what you want by sending it to someone who works on them.

sounds like wither they installed a junk yard cluster, or the van has over 219k miles.

Wouldnt it be noted somewhere what the milage was on the replacement cluster?

Does it have a digital odometer or an older analog style? If it's a digital than it won't matter because it gets that info from the ecm in the vehicle. The mileage suddenly dropping like that, and it needing a new cluster makes me think there are electrical issues. The only ways the mileage would drop like that would be due to someone going into the ecm and changing it, or mosre likely the ecm got replaced with a used one from another vehicle.

I had to change one on a 2004 Chevrolet. It registered the miles that were on the one I purchased, which happened to be a few thousand more than the vehicle actually had so I didn't look into getting it corrected. I would pass on the vehicle, if the owner isn't willing to be honest.
