Where Would USF Have Finished in SEC?
Posted by LSUGoose on 3/20/14 at 8:03 am11
Thrilled that Tigers won, but USF was not very impressive. Athletically, they seemed to be in the category of A & M or Vandy. I thought they looked like a #10 to #11 place team in SEC.

Middle of the pack. They normally shoot the three much better.

I kept thinking their 3's were gonna start falling but they were pretty cold the whole night

We didn't give up nearly as many open looks as I expected. I think we did pretty good guarding the perimeter.

So who in SEC is similar to SMU and where would they fall in the conference pecking order?
SMU is solid. They lost 1 game at home all year and that was to Louisville... Gonna be one tough game.
I'd say they would be top 5 in SEC for sure.
They don't play anyone under 6'4" That will be a problem for us.

I think SMU's style of play is similar to like a Tennessee, Arkansas or Missouri.
I think SMU finishes 4-7 in the conference.

Good comparisons. They protect home court like Arkansas, but their personnel reminds me most of Tennessee.

Wow looking at these numbers (throwing out our RI loss) this seems like it would be a very competitive matchup

agreed. I'm glad we only zoned for one possession. They destroyed it in 10 seconds

We did a really good job of switching ball screens on the perimeter. Thought our overall defensive effort was much improved.
Although I just about came unglued when Jones called a TO to switch to a 3-2 zone about midway through the second half. All I could think of is the number of open threes we gave up to A&M on the road and Arkansas on the road trying to play zone. Thankfully after giving up an easy layup, we quickly got out of the zone.

I'm not familiar with SMU at all, but I watched some of their game last night. It looked to me that the guy who ran the point for the majority of the time I was watching was a short stocky guard. He looked under 6'0" to me, but maybe my height perception was off considering that UC Irvine has that giant dude.
