Been busting arse on mine and my parents for about 2 weeks now.
Question: will burning small piles of leaves under a live Oak hurt the tree or is root system?

Likely not, as I have done it a good number of times...just keep it away from the trunk and don't use anything that is gonna make it blaze up...

Sprayed my centipede yard w atrazine bout a month ago. Just limed all the Bermuda ball fields this week.

how do you get rid of thistle weed? I've got a couple coming up in my front yard. Spray some bayer broadleaf weed killer and it knocked out the clover, but seemed to only aid the thistle's growth.

What I like about centipede is that it doesn't need a lot of fertilizer. Most people hurt their centipede by over doing it, so your best bet is to just lime the soil to get the correct pH. You've heard it time and time again, but a soil sample is really the only way to know what to do. If you do want to fertilize without a sample, stick to a fertilizer with a low phosphorous (middle number on the bag) content. Iron in the fertilizer is a plus. I just try to keep my lawn free of weeds and let the centipede flourish on its own. Bermudagrass is my specialty, but unfortunately my lawn sees too much shade for me to have it for my own lawn.

Might wanna till or churn some mason sand into the soil to prevent compaction and prevent standing water. Will help the grass recover quicker from the foot traffic. Whatever fertilizer you can get your hands on will help, just apply it very moderately.

bootlegger, I have centipede lawn over stiff, white clay here in MS...it doesn't grow very well at all...
do you think I should try to aeriate the soil or something like that?...I have been a little reluctant, as my house is on a pretty good slope and I don't want to start some erosion if the aeriation doesn't work...
I was actually thinking about some type of plug aeriator and then broadcasting some type of organic matter in hopes that it will wash to the holes from the aeriator....

I have added manure and compost and turned it into my garden spot twice now over the past two weeks. I started most of my seed veggies inside last Saturday.

Core aeration is definitely the best option. It shouldn't start erosion, especially if you top dress with soil (or sand) afterwards.- but i've never dealt with aerating on a strong slope. It's much easier to find a spike-type aerator, but these do zero for loosening compacted soil/clay.
Aerating then hydro seeding may be the best route, but hydro is gonna run somewhere in the .16-.20¢ per square foot range.
ETA: I don't start aerating my ball fields until mid April, when the grass is actively growing and can recover quickly from the stress
of the aerator cores being punched out

splurged this year and bought a Stihl KombiSystem with a few attachments - still waiting for lawn and garden to dry out.
