Did anyone catch this a few days ago? Read it . . . makes me sad that we have such idiots in my state - and people who will vote for them.

Calling black Americans "aborigines" doesn't make any sense at all, but is it offensive such that it requires one to apologize for calling them such? I'm sorry I don't understand what the word aborigine means?
And how does someone who grew up in Alabama not know who Harper Lee is?

I only learned recently that the little fruitcake kid that was friends with Scout was based on Harper Lee's real life childhood friend, Truman Capote.

Man, if you've ever seen the movie, that was one ugly kid. I felt sorry for him.

But...McCarthy WAS right...
As for the To Kill a Mockingbird quote, I find that rather odd. The entire article is about Scott Beason but then the last few paragraphs say this:
I bolded the name and title because this man isn't an elected official he's a party official. That puts a kink in your argument that people voted for him.
This is a weak attempt to make Beason look like he agrees with Hubbard's ignorant statement about To Kill a Mockingbird in an effort to deflect from a poor argument against Beason's stance against the book in question.
I would also like to know the context of that comment. To me it doesn't matter if he knows exactly who wrote the book or not because it's just one of those common Republican "gotcha" moments that would never be reported on if said by a Democrat but context is still key here. Some have always argued that Truman Capote wrote To Kill a Mockingbird so he could have simply been making a joke about the author of the novel and that could have been taken out of context. As someone from Monroeville, I would find that quite humorous because we all think the people who believe Capote wrote the book are just as silly as Hubbard's statement seems to be.
This article is garbage.

Another Common Core opponent interviewed by the Anniston Star, Talladega County Republican Party Chairman Danny Hubbard, also said McCarthy was right. While Hubbard objected to many texts offered as "exemplars" by Common Core, he did not take issue with one written by an Alabama native.
"I don't think anybody's opposed to 'To Kill a Mockingbird,'" Hubbard said. "It's a classic. I believe it's written by a fellow from Montgomery."

Beason is obviously a moron. But he's not completely wrong about Common Core.

Exactly - he just hurts his cause by spouting nonsense like this.

I liked Scott Beason OK. Appreciated his efforts to expose corruption (which was lost when the focus became his use of the word aborigines) and his strong stance on illegal immigration.
Does it make the Hubbard fellow an idiot for mixing up Monroeville and Montgomery? I don't think so. I don't know anything about him though. Edited- oh,never mind- he didn't know who wrote it? Dumb....but not idiot.
There are some very stupid voters in AL to be sure- like the ones that vote for Alvin Holmes.

He is also responsible for Bama now being..
A shall issue, pistol permit state
and
Bama having 5 yr concealed carry permits, instead of 1 yr
and
is pushing to allow concealed firearms in your vehicle without a pistol permit.

No way Capote did. He was way too self-aggrandizing for anyone else to receive success for something he did.

There are people who really believe he did. They'll never find proof of that but they won't stop believing it.

Lee is a cousin of Capote and she was his research assistant when when she wrote "To Kill a Mockingbird"
There is some debate over the real author of the book. There are some experts who claim Capote wrote it and thought it was crap and when Lee submitted it for publishing got extremely pissed off and told her that if it was published it would be done under her name because he didn't want any part of it. Lee has never helped end this speculation by being reclusive and refusing to have a lot to do with the book and the subsequent celebration that it has enjoyed. She did accept the Pulitzer for the book and was never published again....
