Why are many of the Southern states the poorest in the nation?

well alot of the welfare recipients are comfortable on welfare (hell I know some that make over 60K/year for sitting on their arse and having kids) so they don't want to work to make more money. Second horrible education system because of generations of welfare.

You've got a point. I lived in La. for 31 years and it was blue when I left, now it's red. Been in Ark. for 31 years and it was true blue when I got here but over the last 8-10 years it has also gone lite red.

Could it be that they don't make much of anything?

I mean, Texas has a great economy... yet they still have a high level of poor folks.

If you remove the career dependents out of the equation and figure in cost of living --- is the south that much poorer?
