Xbox1 surround sound question

What's the best way to hook up the xbox to the receiver? Optical chord? How do you guys have everything set up?

Directv into the Xbox via HDMI, HDMI Out to receiver which goes to the tv.

So there's no direct link between the xbox1 and the TV? I don't have a cable box if that makes a difference.

I'm surround sound retarded. If the TV only goes through the surround sound receiver, how does the xbox get the video? And yes, you can laugh if this is a stupid question

I did it that way (might have been wrong) and the xbox didn't detect the receiver. That's why I started this thread.

Mine is different than above.
HDMI from cable to Xbox
HDMI from Xox to projector
Optical from Xbox to Turtle Beach
Optical from Turtle Beach to receiver
Had to manually input receiver, but it was in there.

Here's a better way of asking my ?...
I have an xbox1, receiver, TV, and two HDMI cables. Nothing else. What's the best way to make this work?

no. everything is hooked up to the receiver. xbone, directv, and bluray player hook up to the receiver via hdmi, then the receiver sends video to the projector via the hdmi out.

Just did xbox HDMI to TV to HDMI 1 on receiver (not HDMI out) + then HDMI 2 on receiver to HDMI on TV. No dice.
