With the current competition situation and recruiting direction of QBs, are classic pro style QBs a thing of the past with LSU ( at least as long as Miles is here?) It certainly seems so. Thoughts?

This is not a Les Miles "thing" it is a football thing.

The trend in college and the NFL is to have a quarterback who can throw and make plays with his legs by scrambling or extending the plays.

Neither Harris or AJ or dual threats per say, but mobile quarterbacks.

Neither seeks to run first but have the ability.

Well, we don't have any run-first guys, just guys that are mobile, in case things break down. I think that's an element that Miles likes to have, and it can save some drives...

It seems to me that college coaches have discovered that dual threat QBs are a safer bet due to what they bring to the table. If you go all in on a pro-style QB and he doesn't pan out, you are screwed. Proven pro-style QBs are still the preference at the next level.

I think you can make an argument that the league is trending toward mobile quarterbacks.

While your better quarterbacks now are pure pocket qb's, I don't think you see a real influx of strong pocket passing qb's.

Luck is the youngest one I can think of in the top tier category.

I will take a Brees, Manning, Brady type over a Kapernick, Wilson, or Vick type any day!

So Mettenberger is probably the least mobile QB in the history of LSU starters. And he produces the best offensive production in the history of LSU. And we go for the mobile type of guys that have consistently been problems for us in the past. Seems legit. I hate the dual-threat QB as of late.

And Luck is fairly mobile, actually.

Dual threats are exciting for sure, but most seem to not be able to win the big game when it counts. I'd rather a QB that can stand in the pocket with a big arm and pin point accuracy than a QB who scrambles for his life because he leaves the pocket too soon. It results in a lot of holding calls/ turnovers

Luck has more rushing TDs than any other QB other than Cam since entering the league. He also ran the same exact 40 time as Cam.

A good offensive line is hard to come by, a mobile quarterback is insurance that you may not find or keep a good offensive line !

I really think coaches prefer a gamer that can make plays, whether he is dual threat or pro style.

Having a duel-threat guy adds a new dimension of play calling that keeps defenses on their toes. It adds a third phase of gameplanning for a DC because a duel threat guy can simply make big plays by himself. Whereas it used to be run defense/pass defense, now becomes run defense/pass defense/who contains the QB? The versatility of having a quarterback who can run with his feet and throw is almost a higher priority than the prototypical big arm drop back passer in recruiting. The game that changed everything was the 2006 national championship between Texas/USC. Everyone wanted the next Vince Young and the next Matt Leinart became secondary.
