Do actors doing cameos get paid?

I mean really paid. Just watched anchorman 2 and the news battle at the end had a-list actors galore. Do all these million dollar actors get paid serious money for these brief moments in a movie? They don't do it just for the fun of it or do they?

Not that much. Probably about 30K a piece, and really they just have fun on set for a single day. Some can get over 100K.

I was watching a bio on National Lampoons Vacation last night. They said that John Candy asked for and got a cool mil. for his bit part at the end of the movie. That was in what.... 82? So who knows what he would get these days.

If it's a studio movie, they probably have to do it for scale. I'm sure cameos are done for free as favors, or all the way up to "whatever they could get."

I heard Artie Lang say he gets a 15k residual check around Christmas every year for his small role in ELF.

i think the union angle will create a floor. i'm sure cameo wages are in the union contract

There is a SAG scale for paying actors. A few years back it was like $750 a day. Of course, the well known actors work for well above the scale. However, some of the big ones will agree to appear in cameos for the scale rate.
I know when Clooney did a cameo on ER after he left the show, a big deal was made because he did it for scale.

I think most times it's a, "I'll do one for you then you do one for me" thing. I'm sure there is compensation for their time, but it's probably more of a lets let loose and have fun thing.

john candy's role in vacation was far from a cameo. he WAS the ending of that movie. that is a supporting role.

Could it also depend on the screentime they have in said cameo role? (i.e. Neil Patrick Harris in the Harold and Kumar movies)

A spoken line on film can be worth a lot.... The number of lines, the length of the show, the type of show, a recurring role etc makes a difference. SAG-AFTRA rates vary on everything but for a full length film (over 90 minute long features), pay is $650 for five lines or less for actors with one shoot day. If they shoot for multiple days, it goes up dramatically
If a studio wants someone badly they can pay the actors asking rate. So for a cameo, they are required to pay the SAG minimum unless the actor requests more. So it completely depends upon how production/the actor wants to play it... I doubt that the anchorman cameos cost much because I dont think that all of those A-Listers charged their quota. It's good publicity for them to be in the movie and they can always hit up Ferrell later to return the favor and do a cheap cameo... But regardless: yes, they do get paid.

i read Matt Damon did his cameo on EuroTrip for free as a favor to his friend who was the director. Matt found out he was filming in Europe when he was vacationing there and he went to the set to bullshite with him. Asked if he wanted to make a small showing and let him be the bands singer.
