Don't most private schools have financial aid for the poor but smart kids? I know quite a few do, but not sure about all.

I went to a cheap Catholic school, my tuition was like $4000 a year or something.

they can, but it's very difficult. They have to be extremely smart with their money and go after any and all financial aid they can get while not sending their kid to a top tier private school. The k-8 prices aren't bad, but once you get to high school, it's a doozy.

Lots of middle class dads would rather have a bass boat and $40000 truck than send their kids to a private school.

Which is probably $7k right now.

Let's assume this family as OP stated has 3 kids in private school. $24k to round. 2k a month.

Mortgage is 2k/month. Utilities 1k/month, Food, easily 1k/month for 3 kids. Nice cars, $1k/month.

That's 7k/month plus misc everything.

remember, it's all about location, location, location. In Livingston or Ascension Parish, private schooling is an unnecessary waste of money. In Baton Rouge (assuming you can't get your kid into the magnet programs), it's essentially a necessity that adds a significant cost onto a family's cost of living. I swear, it seems like for a family with 2 kids, between home prices and private school tuition, I could live the same lifestyle in Galvez as someone in a nice neighborhood in Baton Rouge on 30k/year less
