No, they always had a beginning, middle and an end planned.

It wasn't until Carlton Cuse came on board when they starting building to it. Cuse was not involved in the first 12 episodes, which was the initial ordered run. I do believe that JJ came up from the beginning that Jack would die where he landed and that Vincent would crawl up next to him to comfort him, and Jack knowing he secured rescue for everyone else. There were just countless ways you could end up there. From the start, they all said that they promised that Vincent would not die, and I think the final scene being in mind was why they said that:

They've been pretty honest that during the first 12 episodes, they didn't have a fricking clue what they were doing and just wanted to make them the best 12 episodes as they possibly could be, so they threw everything they could at the Wall. They didn't have a clue why there was a polar bear on the Island, they just thought it was cool.

And they succeeded. By far the most I've ever been enthralled with a television show or movie.

the ones they didn't show on camera died eventually after the events on the island and before the flash sideways of season 6. we don't know how or when kate, Hurley, etc died, but they died before the events of the flash sideways.

My memory is a little shaky on this--but the flash sideways was an alternate universe deviating with the plane in mid air and never crashing, right?

I always took it to mean that everyone died in their own time and they all met at the church, in which time doesn't exist, when they departed the land of the living. Even Hurley and Ben seemed to have ruled the island as #1 and #2 for quite some time and they were there too.

Edit:
Should've kept reading until Christian Shepherd's (Jack's dad's) quote.

Season 6 flash sideways was made to look like an alternate timeline created by the bomb going off at end of season 5. However, it was revealed in the series finale that the flash sideways weren't an alternate time line, but a sort-of afterlife.

Exactly. Like Christian said (not exact, but close): "A place they created so they could all pass on together."

I'll never forget the feels when each one of them had their moments of recognition/memory in the flash sidewayses. Emotional television for sure.

I didn't watch this show from day one, but I did go to a local restaurant and it was on the TV so that was my first memory of lost.

why the hell would a restaurant be playing LOST? That seems odd.

The only mystery that interview solved was that they truly had no idea where they were going with the show and just threw shite against the wall to see what would stick.

Took them long enough.

I know we all figured this to be the case, but they admit it in the interview.

I don't think so, I felt so alone back then

Desmond and Penny reuniting on that boat was for me, the most emotional.
But, why weren't they in the church? Because they didn't have the same bond because they weren't on the plane? My memory is hazy.

I don't recall, but there were a few headscratchers with the church. Wasn't Sayid with Shannon instead of nadia?

Desmond and Penny were in the church. I think he's the person Jack hugs after Locke.

That one just downright pisses me off. It's the only major flaw in the finale. As fricked up as it sounds, Boone and Shannon should have moved on together, with Sayid getting Nadia.

Oh wow, I really need to go back and watch.

And as far as Sayid and Nadia...that was my only gripe about the finale.
They built up that love story for so much and so long, but then he's hooked up in the afterlife with the blonde American he just met?

Typical.

I agree with this and I don't see your alternative as fricked up at all. Shannon was Boone's stepsister. Even if they were full brother/sister, I see nothing wrong with brothers/sisters moving on together in that scenario. What matters is who was closest to whom. Sayid obviously was in love with Nadia and Boone and Shannon obviously loved each other.

Agreed, but maybe they couldn't get the actress or some shite like that.

The only other thing was that I thought Ecko should've been there. But we know why he wasn't (IRL drama). But he was a pretty major character for a while, and one of the more spiritual ones at that.
