If only we had a decent GM. Seems like all we do is keep fixing mistakes.

Denver is back-loading every contract they're taking on at this point. This is a 2 year run and then they'll blow it up.

Can you spell "dead money"?

They actually had a ton of cap room heading into the year.

They are also losing starters but nobody is talking about that.

Wrong.

Up to this point, the team has struggled through the bad contracts or big number contracts without creating dead money; I suspect that will be the order of the day.

There's a few more high risk contracts(Grubbs, Bunkley, Colston are the most pressing) but the numbers keep going down and become very manageable after this season.

They are losing several players from this year.

They also have a ton of contributors on their rookie contracts. They have less than $6 million in dead money, while the Saints have nearly $14 million.

If you don't include Ware and Talib, they have 5 players over $5 million cap hit. They also had only Peyton making over $8.6 Million.

Compare that to the Saints who have, Evans and Grubs both over $9 million and a combined $20 million. Colston and Welker are a wash.

Also, they aren't backloading a ton of deals like some imagine:
Ware - $9.66M, $11.66M, $11.66M
Talib - $7.9M, $7 M, $11M.

Talib's is a bit, but not that much.

In the end, the Saints' bad contracts are the difference.

He's making fun of Lester, as we all should be.

Signing bonus is spread out though. That's his cash value(the actual money he pockets). $9.67m is his cap hit.

The numbers still add up when you prorate the signing bonus.

2015

$3.5 million salary (fully guaranteed)
$3.5 million salary (injury guarantee; converts to full skill/injury/cap guarantee on fifth day of free agency)

2015 total: $7 million

2016

$3 million roster bonus (no guarantees until fifth day of free agency when it becomes fully guaranteed against skill/injury/cap)
$7 million salary (no guarantees)

2016 total: $10 million

(Same link as above)

2016 matches up but not 2015.

If the Saints are going all in like Denver... Does anything think Loomis will trade up in the top ten of the draft for a real deal player?

They have a much smaller window. Peyton has a year or two tops.

We have young, talented defense that'll keep us competing until Drew retires.

And in case anyone was wondering who they lost, it was a starting guard(Beadles), wide receiver(Decker), corner(Rodgers-Cromartie; still unsigned but turned down their offer), and linebacker(Woodyard). They also lost a backup defensive end(Mincey).

They gained a starting corner(Talib), safety(Ward), defensive end/outside linebacker(Ware), and receiver(Sanders).

They've only retained a backup receiver so far(Caldwell).

Starters that are still FAs are safety(Adams), outside linebacker/defensive end(Phillips), halfback(Moreno), and returner(Holliday).

So that puts them down a starting guard, linebacker, and returner with nothing gained.

So while they are signing all these guys, they have also lost pieces and could lose more.

His first year is $9.67 million.

$3M salary + $5M roster bonus = $8M
Add in 1/3 of signing bonus = $5M/3 = $1.67M

Total year 1 = $9.67 M

Year 2:
$7 M base salary (2 - $3.5M guaranteed)
$1.67 M from Signing bonus
$3M Roster bonus

Total = $11.67M cap hit

Same set up for year 3. Much like the Saints did with Byrd, they basically set up his Signing bonus in a weigh to spread out the hit early.

He actually gets a $10 million signing bonus, but they made half of it a roster bonus so it gets paid out this year and only leaves them with minimal dead money after this season.

After this season, he's owed $3.33M from signing bonus nad $3.5M of 2015 salary, thus Dead money = $6.83M).

It was a well drawn out contract if they think he'll do well.

I am not saying Loomis isn't a very good GM moneywise, but the reason we've not had as much dead money in the past few seasons is because we've been forced to hold onto those players (like Smith, Harper, etc). It wasn't because he was amazing and the team was never strapped.

I rarely use it, but fixed it for you.

If we retain these pieces we will be a defensive powerhouse past Drew's years.

adono, I don't know what you're trying to say, but his cap hit is $9.67m this year regardless. It's not $13m.

That's exactly right. That was my point when I said they worked through bad contracts. They should have cut Smith and Vilma last year before they had the "IR" option. Not even going to talk about Harper...that contract was a mistake the day they signed it.
