So.. This Vandy pitcher takes the ball out, sticks the ball back in his glove, and then takes it back out again while in his windup.

IDK why but this just seems illegal to me or just straight odd.. Anyone else notice?

if he does is out of the stretch, with runners on its a balk, it decieves the baserunners, which u cannont do.

As long as he does it every time, he's fine.

No starting and stopping means no balk. Some pitchers keep the ball entirely out their glove behind their back. As long as it's one fluid motion with no stopping or hesitation, it's legal

Wrong, it's not a balk because nobody is on base.

Correct. As long as it's part of his usual routine that he has established, he can do it.

If you've ever pitched or coached pitching it is a technique that definitely helps some guys. It's not for everybody.

In the Miss St - Georgia game that was on before LSU, the Miss St starter did the same thing except he looked even more goofy doing it.

In first game today, Miss St pitcher Mitchel, has similar motion. Taps glove with ball during delivery motion!

I am far from a baseball expert but its not uncommon for pitchers have some weird hitch, motion or habit. Technically every pitch Hunter Gomez threw was illegal.

Dude do you really think a balk can't be called unless there's a runner on base???

Many years ago when my son played HS baseball and pitched a visiting Houston Astro coach told him when a runner was on first to put the ball in his glove and take the signal go into a stretch and come out pitching the ball after he got his grip. This reverses the order of getting the grip and going into the stretch and is legal. The only time it is not legal is when he starts a throw to first without moving his foot touching the rubber backwards before turning. He threw out a lot of runners on first base.

The HS umpires had a lot of trouble with it, calling a balk. The HS coach sent off to the baseball rules committee. They said as long as there is a definite pick up the foot and start it backwards first before starting the turn it is legal.

What would suddenly make it a balk if he pitched like that from the wind up with a runner on base?

Unless the NCAA rules are significantly different from MLB rules, a balk cannot be called with bases empty:
quote:

Rule 8.01(b) Comment: With no runners on base, the pitcher is not required to come to a complete stop when using the Set Position. If, however, in the umpire?s judgment, a pitcher delivers the ball in a deliberate effort to catch the batter off guard, this delivery shall be deemed a quick pitch, for which the penalty is a ball. See Rule 8.05(e) Comment.

quote:

Rule 8.05(e) Comment: A quick pitch is an illegal pitch. Umpires will judge a quick pitch as one delivered before the batter is reasonably set in the batter?s box. With runners on base the penalty is a balk; with no runners on base, it is a ball. The quick pitch is dangerous and should not be permitted.

MLB Pitching rules
It was weird, but legal, as long as it was with bases empty and was not a quick pitch.
