Or Johnny Jones "will eventually get it done." I hear these vague platitudes all the time. Shaq said something similar last night.

What do they really mean? What does Jones (or any LSU hoops coach, past or present) need to accomplish to be considered a success in the eyes of Tiger fans?

I think for an LSU coach to be considered successful he'd have to reach NCAA tourney at least 2 out of every 3 years, while never missing the tourney 3 years in a row, and win an SEC championship every 7 or 8 years.

JJ is handicapped with two extremely undersized guards.....he is in the process of fixing that with recruiting.

Anyone who doesn't realize that size, at that position, is important doesn't understand the modern game or the difficulty the LSU basketball program had this year.

It means give him some freaking time. This program was in a special Olympics state.

I say if Jones doesn't get LSU to the NCAA next year, he needs to go. Too much talent to not get to the big dance.

I don't know what that means but I do know that for Johnnie Jones to be successful he has to be consistent.

Getting us to the tournament consistently and keeping as many in-state players as possible.

when he finally learns to ramp up his intensity as it pertains to defense as much as it does to offense, LSU will be a serious contender. Until then it will be the same ole .500 club

What else do you expect people to say? But there are a lot people including shaq that see the program going in the right direction with Johnny Jones. Look, this team was really lacking depth and experience and that takes time. Jones is a great recruiter, that along with building depth will get LSU to the big dance. Kentucky was expected to win all their games, but they lack experience. Mickey and Martin are going to be much improved next year and form the basis of a good team. Mickey was a big surprise and Martin has a world of potential that will come with time.

His coaching needs to evolve. This year was disappointing, don't think anyone can argue against this with a straight face. He isn't on the hot seat but another season like this one, he will be.

He is also rebuilding a program that was not in good shape when he took over. you can't hold him to s standard of a successful coach who has things running, or a coach who is taking over a traditional powerhouse.

At some point( i think soon) those will be fair standards, but we are getting better every year.

bullshite.

THIS season the talent was there to compete and finish in the top 1/3rd of the league. They were picked to finish 4th or 5th preseason by just about every outlet. UK didn't perform as expected and to extent, Tenn. didn't as well. There was room to finish 3rd in the league. People can continue to make excuse after excuse, but the fact is that the staff did an absolute pitiful job this year. There is no way anyone can say otherwise.

I totally agree. 2 years is sufficient time to turn a progra around. We should terminate him immediately

In a weak SEC, there was certainly enough talent to make the NCAA tourney

While the sarcasm is noted. one recruiting year can greatly improve a team from one year to the next. Building a program takes time.

I don't think anyone wants to fire the guy but it's understandable to be disappointed in the season.

Why do you have to be a dick? Did I say anything in the OP that hinted that I felt Jones should be on the hot seat? No, I did not.

I just wanted to know specifically what people think basketball success is at LSU.

Jones deserves time to get things started. We were a mess when he got here. I simply asked when will we know when we are "there?"

Having said all that, I will add that his stellar recruiting could soon become a double-edged sword. With the studs he's recruited to BR, he'll get pressure to "get us there," (whatever that means - see OP) that much sooner.
