Is the finger pretty much the world standard for spreading caulk? Is there a better or more suited tool than the finger?
I've bought a few of the spreaders from tv ads and they don't come close to the performance of Mr. Pointer.
I should probably get back to work but I hate caulking.

Other than the use of a good caulk gun that allows rapid release of pressure on the tube and has a correctly cut tip for dispebsing utilized in a smooth sweeping ng motion, there is no better caulk smoother than a finger. Especially if the finger was licked.

Using the finger wrapped in a wet towel gives a smoother spread. Always gotta wipe with the towel after.

The most important thing is not to put too large a bead in the crack you are looking to fill. Smoothing latex cailk with a licked finger will work. The guys that do the caulking/ glazing on the windows and expansion joints on large buildings like skyscrapers all carry around a bottle of Ivory Liquid dishwashing soap. They put the soap in a small cup and dip their finger when smoothing a bead of caulk. It comes out very smooth and no caulk sticks to their fingers. They mostly use solvent based caulk, but I have used it on latex caulk with good results.

Definitely gotta wipe your fingers after playing with your caulk.

agree completely...if you are making a mess, then you are putting too much caulk down...

These are the most important, other than wetting your finger before smoothing.

I agree with the "wet willy" approach to caulking. Some pros use a square sponge to get a sharper edge.
A common mistake is buying a non paintable caulk for a paintable surface. Read the label.

Rul #2 of caulking:
No matter how bad you need to, don't pick your nose.

My wife's fingers are much better than mine on the caulk.
