Went fishing in a neighborhood pond yesterday afternoon and caught one fish.. The water is crystal clear and I saw bass everywhere, some looked to be on beds. I could not get them to bite or even look at my bait. Is it the temperature? Do I just suck?
It was frustrating to say the least. Any advice?

If water temp is still pretty cold, then soft plastics with a really slow retrieve, or good ole shiners.

ETA: If the water is that clear, make sure whatever bait you use is natural colors. The bright shiny stuff isn't nearly as attractive to them if they can see.

Clearer the water, the brighter the colors is true to an extent. But the neons and such (like chartruese) doesn't look realistic at all. The fish know this. When water is really clear, natural colors work much better.

I've always used very natural colors in clear water. i.e. watermelon, pumpkin.

They can be extremely difficult to catch on beds. Feeding is not their concern. You have a very small area where you may be able to catch them. Match the hatch, but I would use green pumpkin lizards in that situation. If nothing then fish a little deeper for pre spawn fish with shallow jerk baits. I am no expert, though.

there used to be a bait called a "little fishy" that worked in these situations. I haven't bass fished in decades, though.

some days fish just don't bite anything, and i hate hearing people say,"oh well... if that didn't work you should've tried using blah blah blah", the people that generally do this always fail to realize how that weather conditions is probably the most important factor with the exception of bait when it comes to fishing IMO

there have been days trout fishing in the creeks up here i can using the same bait/lure i have used time and time again to catch the same fish i have caught at least a dozen times and the fish doesn't even move

any day fishing is a good day, but some days are just not good days for catching fish

At least you caught one. I paddled around our neighborhood lake for 2 hours and didn't get a bite.

I suck at freshwater fishing.

If the big females are on the beds and actually doing their thing they are next to impossible to catch . Ive spent up to two hours on big females before i finally gave up . And Lizards and craws are much better for bed fishing than a worm in my experience . I usually have better luck with natural colors . Watermelon , Green Pumpkin , Blacks , And bluegill colors

Drop a lizard rigged on a shaky head rig right in the bed and let it sit there. Wiggle it vertically without moving location and the bass will get pissed off and smoke it. They swim off a few feet sometimes when you first put the bait in the nest. Kill it and let it sit until fish creeps back. Then start irritating her with it. You can have a large time doing this in clear water.

This for sure. If they aren't feeding, you can still get them to bite sometimes just by pissing them off.

Bitches hate it when you bother them while they're resting.

If you think they're on a bed, try a lizard texas rigged with a bullet weight or a crawfish. Anything that looks like a scavenger looking for fish eggs to eat will usually get taken out by a bass. They strike out of anger/protection instead of hunger

When I sight fish for bass I use the smallest bait I can. In my experience they will strike at small crappie jigs before a bigger plastic work.
