I just read Rise of the Warrior Cop: The Militarization of America's Police Forces. It was a really good but also really disturbing look into a topic that is discussed often on here. I'd love to discuss it with others who have also read it.

Just finished "Duty: Memoirs of a Secretary at War." Awesome book. Currently reading "Up from Slavery" by Booker T. Washington. What an incredible man. Dabbling in "Days of Fire: Bush and Cheney in the White House." Some scary stuff.

The Sheriff's Dept. here in Bossier bought some really expensive assault vehicles. Kinda like tanks without the long cannon out front. The reason is simple...they are awash with money from a growing tax base and have to spend it to prevent cuts in their budget.

Thanks for the suggestion. I have been interested in identifying my next book to read. I think this will be it given my interest in the subject.

An aside, Drac, is there any chance that the victims in Austin are gonna sue the city for not protecting the festival site better?

You mean, "Had the police not started chasing down a drunk driver on a crowded street none of this would have happened?"

You already know the answer to your question.

Nope. I see the suit as being 'little wooden barriers not sufficient to stop a car = liability."

You need to read some of the basics of political thought first, I speak of books one hundred years or older first.

where I live, they bought those tanks with stimulus money.

They park them near my house, and I have never seen them moved. Good use of $$

Just finished Vision of the Anointed by Sowell and then my wife surprised me with The Great Degeneration by Niall Ferguson which actually complemented each other very well. Now reading American Creation by Ellis.

Sheriffs need a LOT more fiscal controls.

i haven't heard anything about that. not sure how far they would get with a suit along those lines. From what i understand they did have a lot of solid procedures in place, not much you can do when a lunatic decides to have complete disregard for any and all life, including his own.

I've heard Balko speak several times while in DC, and am a big fan of his.

I've linked his book a couple times, but nobody's responded.

The stem of the problem is the War on Drugs, and all that it entails.

End the War on Drugs=Less $$$ for police=More qualified police + Less funding for military style toys

I wish more people would realize that police simply do not keep us safe. They are rarely a deterrent for crime.

I heard an interview with Radley Balko on the radio last summer. He was discussing not only that once you get a SWAT team, you'll use it - whether you need to or not - but also that Obama has increased funding to programs, that Bush had cut, that reward these types of activities financially.

Lot's of anecdotes of innocents being killed on spurious 'drug raids', officers being accidentally shot by another trying to take down a dog. It was fascinating, and kept me captivated parked in my truck.

I'd like to read his book.

I've read a lengthy summary, but not the book itself. Shame you are in Austin. I'd come steal it from you

Austin and the festival will get sued and if they had a security contractor they will as well. Liability depends on the actions of the driver and the security provided. Fatalities and notoriety probably means settle.

Drac: My last read was "No Way Out: History of the Allman Bros". Just ordered Warrior Cop.
