Political pandering.

Carlin said it best: "Selling's legal. fricking's legal. So, why isn't selling fricking legal? Why is it illegal to sell something that's perfectly legal to give away for free?"

I also believe this. I think the current laws will be ruled unconstitutional.

might as well argue it based on Roe v Wade. Get something good out of it.

It should be argued for the same reason as Lawrence v. Texas.

It should be legal and tightly regulated. Really tightly. So tight.
Seriously though its like drugs. Its always going to be there. Anyone with the internet can look up the nearest Asian Spa and if they aren't sure if a particular place is the kind they are looking for they can figure it out pretty much as soon as they walk in the door.
May was well bring it into the light and get some tax revenue. Vice taxes are always more popular than say - property taxes, or income taxes. It also takes income away from organized crime and forces those who would use prostitution to exploit women to be subject to government regulation. Who the heck would go to an illegal underground brothel when you can go to a legal one where you know the employees get regular STD testing?

The government shouldn't be regulating consensual sex between adults.

Its the government's business to regulate commerce and prostitution is most assuredly commerce. Prostitutes have the same right to a safe workplace and fair wages as anyone else and you should be ashamed to suggest otherwise.

Man, a guy is always payin for sex, you know what I'm sayin?
A whore charges a guy money, right? But if a guy has a girlfriend, hes gotta take her out on dates, buy her shite, and listen to her stupid mother frickin problems, know what I'm saying?
So, eventually, all this shite could be considered commerce, because a guy eventually always pays for sex, know what I'm saying?

You think it's consensual. I think it should be legal, but who knows how many 18 year olds are fed drugs everyday against their will.
With STD and drug screening, you'd be able to detect sex trafficking from simple prostitution

I didn't suggest this. I just think the government should stay out of the bedroom. It's for the same reason I am against anti-sodomy laws, and Louisiana's "crimes against nature" bullshite, especially since the latter unfairly targets the women.

I read a story of a brothel that was coercing its girls into taking drugs. Some were as young as 15.
Those people deserve to burn in hell. However, there are already laws against such behavior. Outlawing prostitution isn't a solution.

What about the women that have their husbands come home after having consensual sex with another woman or man and they give her an incurable STD? It happens quite frequently. There is a ministry at a local church that is led by a woman who had a husband that did such. She didn't know it and one day he came home and told her he had HIV.

So the government can't tax transactions that occur in a bedroom?
If that were the case all business would just transact through bedrooms, tax free.
You're telling me if you hire a girl to clean your bedroom, the transaction is taxable, but if you pay the same girl for sex - that shouldn't be taxable? Or is all commerce in the bedroom tax-free?
If you pay for a massage and no sex - that's taxable - but if you pay for massage and sex - does that render the entire amount tax free? Does it depend on if the massage was purely therapeutic or if it was essentially foreplay - and who makes that determination?
Sounds like a needless complication of law to me.
Far simpler to just make income from all sources taxable.

as this discussion goes on, its becoming more clear why its still illegal

I like how this thread changed to a debate on prostitution taxation.
Prostitution is illegal because their isn't a politician in their right mind who wants that on their resume. In addition, nobody is really pushing the issue through the courts.
LSU grads don't you guys think thats a bit much.

Louisiana is the only state in which convicted prostitutes are required to register as sex offenders. The state's crime against nature by solicitation law is used when a person is accused of engaging in oral or anal sex in exchange for money.
