I am really intrigued by the idea of using slightly oversized bass tackle to throw Strike King 10xd crankbaits and the 1.5oz Super Traps on braided line with wire leaders in an effort to target red snapper. Has anyone ever done this? Can it be effective? Am I just pissing in the wind? I have caught a couple on butterfly jigs but have never tried crankbaits or other hard baits.

The current means of red snapper fishing (chunk of lead and cut bait on a way over sized offshore rod and a heavy reel) just isn't much of a challenge/that much fun.

I've caught them everywhere from on the surface to 400' of water. Often time I catch them 30ish feet from the surface if the rig is in 100'

The 10xd dives to 25' on its own and the trap you could let sink.

Maybe a heavy jigging spoon.

The bill on an 80+ KVD crankbait would be as long wide as your transom, Make sure you cast 400 yards past the reef for the target depth though.

A red snapper will chew it up like a peppermint.

I've caught them on butterfly jigs before:

but was wondering about other hard bodied lures.

How hard do you have to crank to get a bait down 100'?

This. Your 10XD would explode. Plus you would need some magnum treble hooks

Am I missing something here? Heck people catch them every year on the jetties out of the mouth of the river. Do you just not think the snapper will be at that depth?

See, you're thinking casting when you should be thinking trolling

OK, fair enough. What about something like this:

4.5", 1.5oz Magnum Rattle Shad®

If they bite on beef jerky at the end of a shoe string, I think he's got a chance with a crankbait.

Those people really can't catch fish otherwise. Let them have their fun.

This is just some random internet picture, but snapper have been caught while pulling stretch baits. If they're feeding, not sure why you couldn't catch them on some sort of crankbait.

Now I just want to do it to prove it can be done.
