NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports Patriots DT Vince Wilfork has requested his release.
Due $7.5 million, the Pats had approached Wilfork about restructuring his contract. He clearly didn't like what they were selling, and would rather take his wares to the open market. Cutting Wilfork would clear $8 million in cap space, but leave behind $3.6 million in dead money. Wilfork appeared in just four games last season before tearing his Achilles' tendon. Going on 33, Wilfork has spent his entire 10-year career with the Patriots.

My initial thought but it was very obvious the Pats defense struggled without him. I'm sure there will be someone out there that will overpay for him.

I am curious as to if NE approached about an extension? This is not the year to go searching for a 0 tech.

Half the defense got hurt throughout the year and he was hurt in Week 4. They played well without him

The defense didnt break down until Talib got hurt against the Broncos.

This.

I thought he was the anchor of that defense. I think NE is undervaluing him. Doesn't mean he'll have the same impact elsewhere, but i'm really surprised they are ditching him unless it's due to lingering injury concerns.

They did but he isnt having it.

And the pats dont really need a Nose anymore because they run a base 4-3. Wilfork has been playing more 1/3 tech than nose for a couple years

Will he really have THAT big of a market at 33 years old coming off an Achilles injury?

I know NTs tend to have longer careers but still. I can see a one year "Show me" contract from a contender, or a 3 year deal with outs from a team trying to get over the hump.

Hes not worth his current contract coming off an achilles injury

If he's healthy his market will be huge. So many teams with money(Jets Packers Colts Browns Raiders Bills etc) that could desperately use his services.

base 4-3
To my understanding it is still a base 3-4. They just run a ton of subpackages, something like 60%. The staff is high on Jones but he doesn't have great size and didn't grade out particularly well against the run.

Your understanding is wrong. The Pats havent run a base 3-4 in a couple years. They run sub a lot but they are also a base 4-3 team

And Jones is going to be a monster. He graded out very well against the run his rookie year i believe. It was one of the most impressive things about him

No, you're right. Randy Starks did the same thing and ended up signing back with Miami for what their initial offer was all along.

Vontae Davis' contract put all other insane contracts to shame. I bet he definitely called Grandma after that one.

This hurt. You watch the players so long you get attached, and Vince always reminded me of Big Papi. I understand it had to happen, but this is definitely the rough side of the sport.

I assumed since were we talking DTs he would have thought of Chris Jones. Chandler is a monster and has great size for where he plays. As for Chris, he's a good subpackage interior rusher but terrible against the run. Graded out dead last as a DT despite having the second most sacks among rookies.

Chris is nothing more than depth hopefully.
