Is there a different rule in NCAA baseball? In OBR (Official Baseball Rules), a starting pitcher has to go at least 5 in order to be credited with the win. If he doesn't and his team wins, the official scorer credits the win to the pitcher he deems most effective. Last night Poche only went 2 innings but is credited with the W in the box score I see on lsusports.net.

Not sure of the exact scenario. Did he come in when we were tied then left when we were up?

If the coach announces before the game the starting pitcher has an innings limit of less than 5 innings, then yes, the SP is eligible for the win.

Also, if we do something like.

Pitcher 1: Innings 1 and 2
Pitcher 2: Innings 3 and 4
Pitcher 3: Innings 5 and 6
Pitcher 4: Innings 7 and 8
Pitcher 5: Inning 9

Then no announcement is needed. It's simply who was in the game when we went up for good...

Coaches can agree to give it to starting pitcher if agreed before the game.

Up to the score keepers discretion.

When a team uses multiple pitchers before the fifth, the score keeper can decide on who he thinks deserves the W.

In this case, Poche left with a three-run lead and LSU added on from there. Think he made the right call.

You can designate your starter as the pitcher of record before the game if you know he won't go 5.

This, and I think both coaches have to agree.

Designated pitch count can determine winning pitcher as well.

Absolutely this. It has no bearing on game situation, who was ahead, who was effective, etc.

Actually this is true depending on the circumstances of the game. If no agreement is reached before the game between the coaches, then his statement could most certainly be accurate.

Actually, it is solely dependent on these factors if there is no agreement reached between the coaches before a game is started.

What didn't you understand. Your statement was not accurate. It is not "simply who was in the game when we went up for good."

If a pitcher came in when a game was tied and was ineffective he doesn't necessarily have to get the win even if his team went up for good while he was still in the game.

Scenario:
Pitcher comes in in the top of the 5th in a 3-3 tie. He gives up 4 runs in the top of the 5th inning. His team scores 6 runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning and takes a 9-7 lead. A new pitcher comes in in the 6th inning and pitches the rest of the game and the final score is 9-7. The fifth inning pitcher was the pitcher in the game at the time his team took the lead, but does not have to be credited with the win because he was ineffective. The score keeper can make that decision.

So your statement was not entirely accurate.

i heard on the radio a few games back when we did the same thing, the SP can get the win without going 5 innings if the coach decides before the game that he will use at least 3 pitchers.

I'm well aware of that. I was talking about my scenario where we use a ton of different pitchers for not more than a couple of innings like during a mid-week game.
