Good Read from MMQB on the Saints cap situation

Some believe Drew Brees’ contract is to blame.
Thanks to the structure of the seven-year, $100 million deal he signed in 2012—which included a $37 million signing bonus—Brees carries an $18.4 million cap obligation in 2014. And the Saints are dedicating even more cap space to protecting him up the middle. While most teams invest heavily in offensive tackles, Brees’ height (he’s listed at six feet) demands a cleaner pocket. New Orleans’ next two highest cap numbers, therefore, belong to Pro Bowl guards Jahri Evans ($11 million) and Ben Grubbs ($9.1 million).
The Saints, as the conventional thinking goes, can’t keep their veteran weapons given the cost of protecting their quarterback. That’s not invalid, but in today’s NFL, it’s also the cost of doing business. The Saints are one of nine teams with at least $16.5 million of cap space tied up in their quarterback. The Steelers, Giants and Bears have more than $18.5 million invested in their QB. The average cap number among starting quarterbacks who are no longer on their rookie contract is $16 million. In other words, blaming Brees for the Saints’ cap woes is akin to blaming a gas station owner for the high price of fuel.

Look on the bright side. We could've signed someone like Joe Flacco to a similar contract.

Yeah I have no idea why anyone was pointing to that as an issue. In this day and age with his contract, it's actually probably the best of any of the recent ones signed.

Blaming Brees.
That's a good way to determine what kind of Saints fan a person is.

I was really hoping we'd bring in Gabbert. Dude's more money than the US Mint.

Look up Brady's salary then talk bro.

An idiot appears!
Why don't you tell us about Brady's salary? And the extension years after signing the largest contract in NFL history

$14.8m, $13m, $14m, and $15m over the next 4 years. Yeah he took less but that's because they gave him $30m in signing bonus to do the extension. And it's not that much less.
If he had rode it out and became a FA, he would have been hard pressed to get more than a 2-3 year deal and might not have got as big of a bonus/guaranteed money.
Sure the salary may have been slightly higher elsewhere for a couple of years, but it's the signing bonus/guaranteed money that gets players to sign.
Plus he really likes the organization and Belichick and does want to win.
I imagine next year Brees will do something very similar.

By the way:

And this is after Byrd but before the PT extension and whatever move is made with Sproles.

Same website, but something is off between that and the calculator:
LINK
That show we're $1.1m over instead of $1.1m under. Wonder what that $2m is for(rookie hold?)
So we are anywhere between $3-6m under after everything happens.

And Brees' number is 4 million higher. That's not a big deal though, right. I'm glad you all can think for yourselves instead of reading an opinionated article though.

Did you even read the thread?

Yea derpty derp right? Brady outplayed Brees for less money last year. He should restructure NOW. I'm glad to see your'e intent on not winning a Super Bowl though.

Why would the saints want that?
The saints want him to restructure next year, not now.
We save more in doing this.
It's actually very similar to when Brady signed the largest contract in NFL history

You are clearly out of your depth when it comes to understanding contracts and the salary cap.
