This is in reaction to the NFL banning concealed handguns into NFL stadiums that came about last year (I think).

quote:

The New York Police Department is considering a challenge against the National Football League policy that bans off-duty police offers from carrying their weapons into stadiums.

Two Minnesota police organizations have sued the NFL, claiming it violates state law.

I guess Gumbo the dog will eventually be put down for getting out of hand if they actually do sue and win.

What say the OT? Is this a case of cops thinking they deserve preferential treatment or what?

Personally (and I am full on 2nd A) I think a drunk with a gun is a recipe for disaster be it a regular trained citizen or an off duty cop, and if me as a trained citizen can't carry then off duty police shouldn't either. There are plenty enough security, both armed and unarmed to regulate the event. A couple dozen or so off duty cops arent going to make it any safer.

a drunk off duty cop is still a drunk with a gun in a stadium full of people. absolutely no need for it and a terrible idea to begin with.

A POST certified police officer should be able to carry anywhere he/she wants.

yeah, i would like to see how they could justify this applying to only off duty cops.

I agree, I had a pretty intense "debate" I guess you could say with a cop and his wife about this rule when the NFL came out with it banning them from carrying.

I rather only have actual on duty security/police be armed rather than some deputy/trooper/PO thats tanked up with a pistol in his pocket.

It should be 100% up to the NFL, owners of the stadium, etc.

Where ever I may roam, in the court of common sense.

Show of hands...who would feel safer due to off duty police being armed at football games they are going to, presumably, as fans?

Anyone...other than police organizations?

Unless the NFL owns the stadium, they have no say in the matter. An off-duty officer must follow the state laws the cover concealed carry and must also respect the owner of the business policy about carry.

Unless the NFL owns the Super Dome, they can kiss everybody's arse with their rules.

I would feel safer that if there was a threat trained people who could handle it would already be in the stadium.

What is occurring in NFL stadiums that would require more than just on duty officers to pull their guns? If an off-duty cop wants to assist in breaking up a fight or something when the on-duty cop needs help, that is fine. But, I doubt there will ever arise a situation in which pulling out his gun is warranted.

Like others have said, if a civilian that has a concealed carry license can't carry, neither should off-duty cops
