Herm was on Mike & Mike this morning and the discussion turned to the Saints unloading so many players and he went off. In summary, he said that the cap hit of the $26 Mill (+) for Brees is causing the team get rid of a bunch of players and destroy the team concept. He said that this is going to happen to a lot of teams because the market value for QBs is what it is and isn't going to go down.

Herm's solution:

Each team should be allowed to designate one player as a max cap player and his cap hit is maxed at $10 mill...no matter what the actual number is.

I like it. What do you think about this?

Makes a lot of sense, but I doubt if a majority of the owners would approve it. You would have a few teams (Jerrah in Dallas for example), paying the equivalent of 3rd world country's GNP to land a great FA QB.

Or just raise the damn salary cap. The owners are a bunch of greedy pricks. The salary cap should be in the 180 million range.

Although it is good for the teams to have the one player only at 10mil against the cap...it also hurts them in negotiation procedures and restructuring procedures. The players will just want more money and will have the ability to say "well just use the "expensive salary cap designation" on me".

I fail to see how this solved the issue. Like raising the minimum wage it is an extreme short term bandaid that just ends with inflation and no change to the status quo

Either every position needs to be capped or there needs to be a limited percentage of the salary cap per player

Yeah to me that seems like it would just open more problems up. I mean the QB is the most important singular position on the field, it's pretty accurate for them to be one of the highest paid players in your team especially when Brees is a Super Bowl winning QB.

If Herm wants to bitch, look what happened when Baltimore broke the bank. FAs left them like crazy. Dallas broke the bank on Romo and their destined to go 8-8 for eternity. Atlanta broke the bank for Matt Ryan and they went 4-12 and have to pretty much rebuild their whole o-line and defense.

Of all the teams who have "broken the bank" recently, we're the only one contending for a Super Bowl as of last season. We're still in a great spot. And honestly? I don't think any of our recent cuts is even close to a direct result of Brees cap hit.

ESPN and the media can bitch all they want but they are one of the main reasons the league experiences inflation more and more every year. Fans watch TV and watch and go to the games more than ever before and the popularity of the league is only bringing in more revenue which in turn warrants more money to the players. This is the main reason the salary cap is expected to be ridiculously high by 2018. I don't blame the players for wanting as much money as they can get for the average 5 year NFL career, but asking for 4-5 mil over the player's median salary at the position he plays is crazy and should not be entertained. To me, you take the median annual salary at the position, and if the player is the best in the league from a number's standpoint, you offer him a bigger signing bonus and workout bonus and add a small amount to the base salary to show him you value him while still not killing the cap.

Then the NFL turns into the MLB and all the rich teams buy players for ridiculous amounts and then only hit the cap $10M

Good in theory, bad in practice.

Did you miss the part where it would only be allowed for one player?

Herm wasn't too critical of the Saints agreeing to pay the money to Brees. His point was that more and more teams will experience the same problem...if they have a upper level QB. This is a QB driven league and you have to pay them or someone else will. The league office has made this a "passing league" and the QB salaries are an end result of this; therefore, the league needs to allow teams to keep their QB without gutting the team.

He said the 49ers will be paying Kap $18 Mill pretty soon (that's not even close to what Kap will get....IMO)and they'll be dealing with the same problems the Saints are dealing with now.

They weren't. They have almost all been players that needed to be cut anyway. Herm doesn't know what the frick he is talking about. Surprise, Surprise.

No, I didn't.

It's still an unfair advantage if a team can sign a player over another team for the same cap hit just because they have a bigger fan base..

His point still stands. It gives wealthier franchises an advantage to sign that one big time franchise player/quarterback if the owner is willing to shell out the money.

Or say that that player must be a player that was already on your team for at least 2 years. That way someone couldn't just run in and throw 100 mil at your QB and then say he only counts 10 mil against their salary cap. This would also allow you to draft and then continue to keep a franchise player long-term.

I don't like that idea. Like someone already said it would turn into a strict money game.
