How do I cancel my credit card?

I decided to get a credit card about 6 months ago because I was tight on money after buying a new house and having a baby.
But now, I find myself spending more just because I have it. I have the money to pay it off which really isn't that much debt, and I have plenty that I saved along way.
What is the best way to cancel this because I've heard different things about it hurting my credit if i do?

Just set up an autopayment for something small like water bill/amazon/magazine sub and then cut it up. Set up auto payment to pay it off and forget about it. You'll get the benefits of raising your credit without the temptation

Just call their customer support line and ask them to close the account. Simple as that.
If it isn't a big credit line to start with then you probably aren't impacting your score significantly, and even if it is we still aren't talking like it's a huge deal like being late 30 days would be.
You'll still have to pay any remaining balance of course but so long as you make the monthly minimums you can take as much time as you like although you should pay it off asap if interest is high. Closing the account just means you can't charge any more, they'll gladly let you carry a balance for a long time if they can collect high interest.

I've heard of people putting it a ziplock bag and freezing it in a container of water if you really have no self control. But you should always have at least one credit card. Just stop using it. If you have the money in your account don't use it. Better to have the line of credit open IMO

Like others have said, do not cancel the card if you can help it. This will lower your "average age of open credit lines"; which is a portion of your credit score.
Instead, you can cut the card up, freeze, sock drawer the card and not use it again. Just don't close it unless you really think you are getting yourself in trouble. Jmo

Call up credit card company, ask for a $1,000,000 line of credit, when they say no, tell them you want to cancel the card

It can hurt your credit if you do not do it right, but I don't see the need in cancelling. Unless there is an annual fee that makes it not worth it I don't see the need to cancel.
Just a suggestion on what I do with cards I don't really want anymore:
Go on Amazon Prime and find something you use on a regular basis that is not much money. (coffee, toilet paper etc). Start a "subscription" for that and use that card that you don't want. That way you will have a minimal charge every month that will show activity. Just pay off that small amount every month while getting household item(s) that you would usually use anyways for cheap. And put that card in your safe, freezer...whatever so you're not lugging it around in your wallet and tempting you.

Why not use a rewards credit card and pay off the balance each month?
My recommendation is the Starwood card.

i am baffled that you were able to purchase a home without previously having a credit card. in my view, you gain nothing by closing the card. just take it out of your wallet and keep it at home. it is always nice to have it there if you need it. i have 2-3 that stay in a drawer at the house and only are used for certain things.

Not trying to hijack, but how do you find any items on Amazon for cheap that you can buy at Target or Walmart? Any time I look on there, it's like 3 times as expensive

I found a few items. However, they keep canceling my subscription so my efforts so far have been pointless.

Like Teddy said, there's a few. I don't dig for em a lot and set them up a while back. Community K-cups are $22 on Amazon for 3-12 packs. That's about the same as I'm paying at the grocery store or a tad cheaper.
I'm not doing it to save a ton at the store, I'm just keeping a 10 yr old shitty credit card active to bolster my credit rating.

Subscribe & Save. You get 5% off the price and if you have 5 or more items in your order, you get 20% off the total price. It's most definitely not 3 times as expensive. I price check stuff on walmart.com before I subscribe and save, and generally the pre-tax/pre 5% price is the same as walmart.com.

this ^. i have found that amazon items are nearly the exact same as from other places. if shipping is included from another vendor with lowest price, amazon's price will match that price w/ shipping cost.

I have really good credit from other sources, plus the thing that helped me out was being active duty and getting a VA loan. Like I said, I've saved up a lot, so if think I'll just pay the balance off and either use it for a reoccurring bill or not at all. Thanks everyone for good advice. I'm still a youngen.

Please read this before you just stop using it.

Your link agrees with the point I made that if your credit limit on that card is low then it really doesn't matter.

Maybe it's just the items I was looking at then. I browsed a few items I use monthly and stopped looking bc they were overly expensive.
I'll have to look a little deeper and see what else they have to offer.
