Long story short, I'm home alone (rented duplex) and was just awakened by the smell of electrical burn/burnt rubber/burnt plastic. It took me a few minutes to realize there wasn't a fire. I eventually found the source of the smell - an overheated box fan. The motor seems to have overheated and the fan is no longer working. Presumably, a belt or something burned up and emitted the smell.

Question is, now that I've taken the fan outside, is the smell inside toxic? Basically, it's the smell of burning rubber/plastic. Sometimes you get it when running a vacuum. . . This is a really old house and the windows have been painted shut, so I'm not really able to air the place out quickly. I've got the doors open and all ceiling fans going.

I have no way of knowing how long the belt had been burnt up before I woke up. Basically, I'm just looking for reassurance that I won't get cancer or something. TIA

ETA: Will this smell penetrate all my clothing? I don't want to go to work tomorrow smelling like shite and not knowing it.

Not exactly the healthiest stuff you want to be breathing in. I know plastics release toxic chemicals when burned. I assume rubber isn't as bad since all those car shows/races and stuff have them burning all the time, but it can't be great.

As long as you're 100% that the smell was coming from the fan you oughta be good. Biggest danger would be if the smell was coming from some burning wires in the walls - then you're worried about a house fire.

No real way to know that but it's doubtful the burnt rubber will cause cancer. Will need to know some other lifestyle choices of yours before I can tell you without a doubt whether or not you'll get cancer.

No doubt. The motor was piping hot, and the fan had stopped working during the night.
