Sounds like a bad alternator
Bad alternator and bad battery possible, bad alternator can possibly keep it from starting.
However with the battery losing charge from the bad alternator it will not start even with jumper cables.

Check the ground cable from the battery. Sounds like it's loose. But this is just one of MANY possibilities.

Test both the battery and alternator and go from there

It's probably the battery, which was caused by the alternator going bad.

found your problem
I will second the alternator theory, however check the master fuses. I paid to have my alternator replaced in an older Altima thinking that was the issue. After the repair, the problem was still there. Then they replaced the master fuse and the car worked perfectly. Of course upon my questioning, they denied that the alternator wasn't the cause and didn't need to be changed, and that the bad fuse was a coincidence.

You need a new battery.

Mine did that and it was the starter.

Whoa! A bad alternator will keep it from STARTING while "jumped"? That's news to me! Thought it was the other way around....It will start when jumped but will die when disconnected.

Electronic fuel injection requires a working alternator, I thought??

Exactly. I change my own oil and filters in my truck but it's too hard in her car. It might be time to get some ramps and get dirty in the future,

Can they test an alternator at Auto Zone?

Yep, at least the ones I've been to

Saw it a few months back on my wife's car. It would only click when turning it over with jumper cables. Battery was good and alternator was out.
It did start once but died when I disconnected the cables. The next attempt wouldn't even get the started to engage.

Your battery is definitely bad. However, so could your alternator. You'll need to bring it to someone who can get it running. Autozone can test for bad diodes in the alternator or dead cells in a battery.

This place is the greatest assembly of minds known to man. I am hard pressed to find a subject that the OT cannot give quick advice to or answers to my questions. Imagine if everyone here was applying themselves to some global problem instead of trolling for babe threads.
