Morning Call calling it quits in Metairie location

They left the French Market 40 years ago for Severn after more than 100 years competing with Cafe du Monde. I doubt tourism was as major in the 1970s as today, so I would be surprised if they don't go back to the Quarter.
Their new location in City Park is the shite though. Awesome atmosphere.

I know they're probably looking back in the Quarter, but I think putting it somewhere on Freret would be $$$.

That's a bold idea. I like it. They know 95% of their FQ business would be tourism but yeah there is nowhere on Freret or even Magazine to get a beignet. Huge market.
Metairie is stuck in the 20th century. It never did anything to keep up with the times. Adding a Macy's is great but people in their 20s and 30s want urban environments, cultural amenities, walkability. A fresh start would be allowing 5-15 story residential buildings with street level cafés and shopping in Fat City like NOLA is building on Loyola Ave with South Market District.

I agree with you 100% about the Morning Call in City Park. I really like that one and the atmosphere is great.

It's full of chain restaurants. I don't know why no one opens more mom and pop restaurants in Metairie.

Probably tough to break into the market with everyone so used to their chains in Metairie.

I think it would do very well somewhere on freret.

I guess 40 years is a long time to call a move short-sighted, but I still think forsaking their longstanding spot in the Quarter (I think they were around before Cafe Du Monde, if I'm not mistaken) for freaking Fat City was about as short-sighted as you can get.

You mean you're not excited about the Cheesecake Factory being built now at Lakeside (taking away a couple hundred parking spaces too)?

Because people in Metairie want chain restaurants.

Yeah 40 years is a good run, but they really should get back to Decatur St. ASAP, especially considering the Tricentennial is coming up which should be a huge tourism driver.

Is there anything in that little corner of the Jax Brewery on Decatur and St. Peter? Seems like everything that pops up there goes under, but it might suit Morning Call well.

I know. It's like chain central. Many more chains than most cities of its size. A phenomenal amount of chains. People in Metairie must just love chain restaurants.

There are quite a few mom and pops. Tons of poboy places. Ethnic places. High end restaurants? Yes, Metairie does not have a lot of that.

Not sure about JAX Brewery but tourism quickly dries up downriver of Dumaine St. so they would best be suited to find a place near the fork in the road with N. Peters. Yesterday at 4:00 there were a hundred people in line waiting for a table at Cafe du Monde. There is a LOT of beignet money waiting to be taken from tourists.

Oh come on. 40 years ago downtown NO was on a clear & obvious decline and Jefferson Parish was the place to be. It was the right decision at the time. I don't know how they were supposed to predict, in 1970, that a bunch of twee hipsters were going to move downtown in the 2010s and declare it "rejuvenated". And even if they could have predicted it, were they supposed to say "sure we're going to lose money for 40 years, but it's worth it to make sure that, in 2014, a bunch of bearded Oberlin grads wearing Croakies won't look down on us for being in the uncool part of town."

Morning Call has a superior product to Cafe Du Monde, in my opinion. They produce crispier donuts.

great post
However, the city has come a looooong way. And no I don't think those hipsters have contributed a whole bunch to it.

I agree. It's not even close. Coffee is much better, as well.
