How long should a phone interview last?

I ask because I just had one that was pretty short (i think), but I feel like it went pretty well for the most part and ended naturally enough.

10 minutes or so.
They are deciding if you make the second round (in-person).
I assume it's an out of state company or position?

I wouldn't assign a time to it. I had one that lasted an hour and nothing came of it, and another one that was maybe 15 minutes that resulted in an offer.
This sounds like it went fine.

If it was a first call, it was probably just to screen you for the second round.

Sometimes it is for an out of state position or out of city position and they want to decide if it's worth both parties' time to meet in person. Those are usually 25-30 minutes IMO.
A lot of the time it's someone from HR and they're deciding whether to pass you on to the hiring manager or your supervisor who will be interviewing you. These are usually brief and just cover your background and why you're looking to make a change. Think 10-15 mins or less.

As long as it flowed and they seemed to like you then I wouldn't worry about how long or short it was. I've had really short ones that got me a job and really long ones that didn't and vice-versa.

It wasn't out of state (but well over a 5 hour drive),but I couldn't physically be there for the time he slotted me for. I asked him if he could change my time, but he said we could do a phone instead. Not sure that looks great, but I didn't have any other options.

It varies wildly from company to company. I'm never been on two interviews that were the same, different people just tend to have vastly different interviewing styles. I wouldn't try to read much into the length of the interview.

HR has to justify their existence somehow. I hate HR, they don't know shite about the positions they're hiring for. Let's just skip the bullshite and let me talk to someone who matters.

The few I had were well over an hour each, but they were with who would be my direct supervisor and each (only 2)of them we had a lot in common (professionally and personally), I got both jobs. Both were followed up with on site interviews (out of state) which progressed into lunches.

Yeah I've had long in person interviews that nothing every came from and I've had job offers from a 20 minutes in person interview. Just depends on the person doing the interview.

curious myself, too. I'm looking at some positions OOS. I don't anticipate being flown in, based on the job. I still have to wait and see if I do get interviewd too.

My only one lasted 20 mins...thought it went well, but didn't get the job.

My first job out of College I had an interview that lasted less than 10 minutes. As I was walking out of the building I looked at my watch and thought to myself; that was a short interview. They called me three hours later and offered me the job. So the length of the interview is not what matters.

Half hour tops. Any more and it should be in person. Most are about 10-20 minute in my experience.

I am a mid-level software developer where phone interviews are common.
I've been hired off of two telephone interviews alone that lasted less than 10 minutes. However, most may be slightly longer than this.

I've had a behavioral based interview last 45minutes on the phone.
