Just watched Casino Royale and Quantum back to back this weekend. I seriously don't get all of the hate for QOS. Entertainment Weekly had it ranked as one of the worst Bond movies ever made behind duds like Moonraker, The World Is Not Enough, Die Another Day, A View to a Kill, and License to Kill.

I totally disagree. I don't think it is as strong Casino Royale, but I find it way more entertaining and interesting than Skyfall--which to me was a failure because just about every aspect of its plot and visual tableau was plaigiarized in some way. I liked the return of a nefarious secret organization (Quantum--a clear homage to SPECTRE) and would like to see the series develop this organization more. The climactic scene at the hotel is pretty damn stunning and thrilling every time I watch it. I even like the Bolivian secret service girl out for revenge--and the fact that she's more honest than Bond about it.

Ultimately, I think the film shows the transition of Bond into the 00 we're used to seeing--free of emotional attachment and entanglement.

Any thoughts? I just don't get why people didn't connect to this one. Did it just have the bad luck to follow one of the best action films ever made in Casino Royale?

I liked QOS better than Skyfall. I don't get the hate for License to Kill as well. I think that one is great. I also don't get the love for Skyfall, so there's that.

Other than the Hindenburg hotel in the middle of the dessert, my only real gripe about QoS is that it really was a coda to Casino Royale. That's not a bad thing though. I liked it for all of the reasons posted in the OP, and really thought Quantum was the way the series would go. The plot did borrow a bit from For Your Eyes Only in my opinion, but not nearly enough that I wanted to shun it. It's not my favorite Bond film, but I will certainly put it on before some others.

It had some good parts but the Quantum organization ended up being a bit of a dud. The super mysterious cabal with tentacles in every intelligence outfit in the world plans to use their full resources to engineer a coup in South America so that they can...charge the Bolivian people triple on their water bill?

But I definitely don't get the hate for License to Kill. At the time, people bitched because Dalton was so severe and "James Bond doesn't go after drug lords" but these days, "serious" is in and now that we know that some of these drug lords are in bed with terrorists as well, it's plausible that drug lords would be on the radar of intelligence communities, even though Bond's reasons were personal.

I also really liked QOS- I just found the stylized action more to my taste- loved the opera setpiece.

I also thought Olga Kurylenko's character one of the better one's in the series.

I also thought the water plot quite prescient. Water wars are coming. Hell just look at how angry people are in the Tennessee, Georgia, and Alabama because of water resources.

Yeah. I liked it.

Although ending the movie with Bond and the girl walking out of an exploding hotel was kinda meh.

I think the hotel scene gave it a bad name....

You've inspired me to watch the 3 new ones today. Just started Casino Royal.

QOS - uninteresting villian, little matching of wits, which is why Goldfinger, Thunderball and Casino Royale were so good.

Direct sequel to Bond film
Bond falling in love and taking revenge

I did not dig any of that.

I just did not feel this film. I still think that Die Another Day is far and away the worst Bond film, but it is at heart still a Bond film.

Quantum of Solace could have been called generic action film.

It's the skeleton of a good movie thanks to the writers strike. The same team from Casino Royale submitted the first draft of the script the day the strike began. This left Craig, the Producers, and Marc Forster to fill in the blanks and make changes on the fly. The editing is suspect, but there are the right ingredients present for a worthy successor to Casino Royale.

It's definitely not the worst.

The Opera scene is THE standout of the film IMO.

Casino Royale and Skyfall I thought was great. I thought Quantum of Solace was a little disappointing. It wasn't bad though.

This is how I felt too. For the record though, I was entertained by all 3 of this series.

Yep. And I thought Daniel Craig was a fantastic James Bond.

I saw QoS in theaters, the only time I ever saw it. I remember being whelmed by the mastermind's plan being to control the water supply, being pissed about what they did with Gemma Arterton, and wondering why they blew up a weird hotel in the middle of a desert.
