I bought a new construction house last year and the sod is still very bumpy and uneven. Do I need to use sand to fill in holes/level out? or do I need to use topsoil?

I wouldn't worry about it right now. Time will cure everything.

In time it will fill out. You can use sand to fill in the holes. Grass loves sand and grows fast in it.

Has it ever been rolled?

Search for what "top dressing" is best in your area/grass

If you're using Scots stuff, the bag will tell you or go to their website.

Do the weed and feed now, or the next forecast rainstorm. Anytime in the next couple of weeks should be good, just make sure it gets watered real good right after you apply.

I've done it about this time of year for the last few years. My grass is weed free and dark green while all my neighbors are covered with clover and crap.

I usually apply once around now and then hit it again with about half as much in about 3-4 weeks.

If Bermuda - sand
San Augustine - topsoil/ or even better some leaf mold compost mixed with it.

Most guides recommend sand. About a quarter inch a month during the growing season until it levels out. Other guides recommend a 50/50 sand and soil mix.

For deeper holes pull back the grass, fill the hole, and replace the grass. I recommend buying a tamp tool.

You can use a weed and feed after March 15th, but you really shouldn't use it until the grass comes out of dormancy.

My lawn is going on it's third year and it's still a little bumpy in spots. My grass is healthy and strong, though. No worries.

I have a half filled back of turf builder from last season. You guys think it's any good, or should I toss it?

I believe the term is called "top dressing." You get someone to bring sand or topsoil in, and spread it with a bobcat. Your lawn will look like carpet when it grows through. I'm researching the topic myself.

If you have several large deciduous trees in your yard, then you really shouldn't need to do this. Just mulch your leaves during the fall instead of bagging them.

another hijack

I'm in a new construction with centipede. My lawn is holding water near my back patio. Also the back of the yard is having some problems with holes and drain paths. Do I just fill in the holes and paths or is there another problem that I have to address?

I was surprised how uneven my new sod was too when I bought a new house. The major answer is that it will settle but that does take about 3 years or so. Rolling will really help. I bought a tamper and beat down the most uneven places.
