I've mentioned before that my dad bought me a Mossberg 835 "ulti-choke" turkey gun a few months ago in an attempt to bribe me into becoming more of a turkey hunter.

Anyway, turkey season is fast approaching, so I decided to take it over to the shooting range on a nearby WMA to pattern it. HOLY MOTHER OF GOD, shootin' guns is popular these days! I took my hawk out for a spin early, then went by the range at about 11:30. I figured it would just be me and a couple of other sinners who weren't in church. There had to be 50 people there, half of them with AR's. I grew up in the country where people just shot in their back yard. I wasn't expecting such a crowd.

I did finally manage to get onto the 25 yard range, where I was just going to shoot a couple of times with light loads to verify that the sights on the gun were accurate. They weren't. The gun is shooting about 10 inches high at that distance. I didn't feel like waiting around an hour for a spot on the longer ranges and then waiting 10 minutes between shots, so I just left. I'm going to try after work. I get off at 3:00. Surely it won't be so crowded then.

Has anybody else had this issue with an 835? I got home and checked it out, and I don't think I have any adjustment left to move it down. I can go higher, but not lower. This has me thinking I might end up changing the sights. Or, maybe I can somehow raise the front sight up? I don't know.

If you have a small laser pointer, you could place in the barrel and point at a wall to sight it in with.

I have the 835 but never even thought to shoot it at a target.

If you have rifle sights on it, you'd better. After discovering the issue, I've been researching online, and it seems to be VERY common with the 835. The front sight needs to be taller.

Went to swan creek huh?

Its always packed on weekends. During the week, the earlier the better is your best bet to sight something in.

I shoot an 835 as well. I replaced the front bead with a set of true glow sights. Took a few shots to get them lined up L - R but I have had no issue with it shooting high or low.

Yep. Is there a less-popular place near Huntsville?

How does the original front sight come off? I looked at it last night and didn't see any screws. Is it just clamped to the rib?

Not really. Skyline is on the other side of HSV towards Scottsboro. Would prob be about the same right now.

I cant remember exactly. Its been a while. Isnt the hole threaded and the bead scrwed in? Should be either that or staked.

Yeah, skyline is a little farther than I'd like to drive anyway.

My front sight looks like this:

And the rear looks like this:

I'll check them out better when I get home, but I don't think either have screws. I'm pretty sure I'm going to have to replace the sights if I want it to shoot where I'm aiming.

If that's the only problem you've had with an 835 count yourself lucky. Seen too many of those with actual dangerous issues that were headed back to the factory.

I'm not a mossberg fan in general, but it's what my dad bought for me. He said he tried to find an 870 but couldn't, and ended up with the mossberg. That said, they supposedly pattern very well, and it's not like it will be shot a lot since it's just for turkeys. I just need to get the thing shooting where I aim.

Mine had a diffetrent setup factory. Looks like your front site just snaps on. The rear sight has an adjustment scree. Use it to set your elevation when you make it back to the range. You should be fine with that setup

Yeah, I figured they just popped off, but I wasn't positive. Tested it out earlier and they came right off. But, that adjustment screw for the rear sight is adjusted as far as it will go. That's the problem. However, I did find that the rear sight wasn't popped all the way down on the rib. That should help, but I don't know if it will be enough.
