Loomis’ tenure has produced the greatest moment in Saints’ franchise history. It’s also been responsible for the worst.
Loomis’ twin coup of Sean Payton and Drew Brees in 2006 changed New Orleans football forever. His complicity in the “Bountygate” scandal made it the shame of the NFL. With Payton away for all of 2012 and Loomis banned for half of it, the Saints fielded literally the worst defense in the history of the league.
Thankfully for Saints fans, that wasn’t all she wrote. The Saints bounced back to 11-5 in 2013, picking up their first ever road playoff win in the process. That’s the good of Loomis. The bad has been his over allegiance to veteran defenders, and generally shaky drafting.
But when you get the broad strokes right — in this case coach and quarterback — you have room for error. Loomis uses that room quite frequently, but has made a formerly moribund franchise relevant, and is poised to keep it that way for at least as long as Payton and Brees are in town.

If we sign anybody in free agency, or draft any players, it'll just be to correct mistakes. All the good GM's are kicking back, sipping on a delicious beverage, and laughing at the Loomis's of the world as they toil.
Will they ever get it right? Probably not.

I totally agree with all of this. He's other best, but based on team success since he's been here, I think he's very deserving of a top 10 spot. If he can have another strong draft and start to manage salaries more efficiently, then he'll move up.

So they're saying he gives out bad contracts and doesn't draft well....wouldn't that be the symptoms of a bad GM?
The overpaying of vets really came after our Super Bowl win and considering that was the team's first big success, it's kinda understandable. He seems to have been much better over the past two offseasons.
In the Saints case, I think the coaches have more say in the drafted players and Loomis deals more with the financials. But being the GM he will get the blame even if it is not all deserved.

-the allegiance to players is as much or more Payton IMO.
-the backloaded second contracts and restructures- I think most know the term "kicking the can down the road". Certainly there have been some I would have preferred not signed. On the other hand, I appreciate the win-now push.
-drafting I think the weight again goes to Payton & the scouting dept. The vast differences in the type of players drafted under Loomis with Haz & Payton are immense.
