Why has honesty fallen out of favor?

A couple of days ago, I backed into an unattended parked car while trying to grab a parking spot at a hospital (1st fender-bender I caused after 48 years behind the wheel). I broke their tail light. There were no witnesses other than myself. I immediately wrote an apologetic note along with my name and address, phone number and insurance information and stuck it on the driver-side window. I then went to hospital security to report the mishap and they contacted the owner of the other vehicle.
The attending security guy thanked my for being honest - in a way that implied it was odd that I would do that. After a few minutes, I met the owner of the other vehicle, apologized profusely and verified that she had my contact info. Again, she thanked my for being honest and commented that not many people would have done that.
So my point is, why has the simple act of holding oneself accountable fallen out of favor in the last decade or so? Why is it so much more prevalent today vs 20 years ago?

I don't think much has changed. There have been honest and dishonest people for as long as we have been able to communicate with language.

You're not supposed to fish for acclaim for something you're SUPPOSED to do.
Well done being an upstanding citizen of the world.

I don't think it has fallen out of favor, I think that just more people get caught now then before.
Now with cellphones, cameras everywhere, the Internet and social media, I think more people just get caught lying.
Also, without getting too political, it does seem like more people don't want to accept the consequences of their actions and always blame it on other people.

There are still plenty of honest people out there.

Wow what an elaborate way to pat yourself on the back. So because two people thanked you that means holding people accountable has fallen off this decade? Makes perfect sense.

because honesty makes you FAR more liable to getting sued
Being dishonest often allows you to be more successful in life in many ventures.

I'm not sure OP was subtle bragging. I think it was truly a cool story, bro.

Trashy people grow into trashy parents who raise trashy kids, hence STTDB, serial dishonesty and other trashy behaviors.

It's never really been "in favor". Sure, the "commandments" of society, by and large, seem to include something about "bearing false witness", but those in power disregard it at an alarming frequency.
In my ken, "Successful" people seem to be honest only when it benefits them.

Is it cool? Sounds like he got in a wreck and nothing else happened. I still don't see how anything in his story shows that honesty has "fallen out of favor"?

This a brag thread?
Cause it seems like one.

We live in larger, more anonymous communities, so our social ties with each other are weaker. That means that we feel less empathy towards the people we interact with everyday, and our dishonest actions are less likely to alienate us from the community as a whole.
Just a consequence of urbanization.

Baby Boomer Christianity is the answer. A self serving, strongly hypocritical and greedy brew.
