I suppose this won't come as a surprise to anyone...

quote:

On Sunday, hackers took over the Reddit account and personal blog of Mark Karpeles, Mt. Gox’s CEO, to post an angry screed alleging that the exchange he ran had actually kept at least some of the bitcoins that the company had said were stolen from users.

quote:

The hackers also posted a 716 megabyte file to Karpeles’ personal website that they said comprised stolen data from Mt. Gox’s servers. It appears to include an Excel spreadsheet of over a million trades, a file that purports to show the company’s balances in eighteen difference currencies, the backoffice application for some sort of administrative access to the databases of Mt. Gox’s parent company Tibanne Limited, a screenshot of the hackers’ access to those databases, a list of Mark Karpeles’ home addresses and Karpeles’ personal CV.

quote:

In the hackers’ summary of Mt. Gox’s balances in various currencies, they point to a claimed balance of 951,116 bitcoins, which they take as evidence that Mark Karpeles’ claim to have lost users’ digital currency to hackers is fraudulent. “That fat [f***] has been lying!!” a note in the file reads.

I think that if this is accurate, it means that the bankruptcy filing might get dismissed so Gox's depositors can go after them.

I don't know if this is enough to being charges with...Karpeles could have been just that incompetent (I doubt it).

Anybody know how Gox was organized? As far as I can tell it was a sole proprietorship with Karpeles owning most if it (could be wrong). I wonder what his personal liability will be if the BK filing is thrown out.

Where is Wiki?!

I need reassurance that people just don't understand delivered with self-assured arrogance!

He got seriously owned in the Help Board. Truthfully, he came across as a spoiled, petulant child in that thread who couldn't get his way so he has taken his ball and gone home ever since.

Yeah I'm wondering if Wiki is gone for good.

Josh will probably chime in, although he has pretty much conceded that Gox is a shite show and you can't trust any third parties with your btc.

Apparently, the only way to participate in the btc economy is to keep them all offline, which seems like the equivalent of keeping all your cash stuffed in a safe in your house.

But how do they get these coins back? Its not like there is a physical coin to give them back... If they no longer have the "Code" for the coin, its not like they can just go get another one and give it to someone.

No I agree that horse has left the barn and these people will never be made whole, but I'm wondering if they can go after the personal assets of Karpeles and others who were running Gox. The article mentioned addresses for Karpels so maybe he has something to go after.

You would think... But then again, there in lies the problem with Bitcoin not being regulated. Is it actually acknowledged as "An Asset"

I'd imagine they have the same rights as someone who had their WoW money/weapons stolen?

Maybe

Or maybe something like an mp3 file...who knows.

I read a few days ago that the Japanese government is thinking about classifying it as a commodity but I don't know what the implications of that would be.

They should consider doing something because while I believe bitcoin is a bad joke, digital currency is probably here to stay.
