The New Orleans Times-Picayune expects Saints coach Sean Payton's offense to be a "balanced, ball-control attack" in 2014.

Payton's offense averaged 23.6 carries per game the first 14 weeks of 2013, before averaging 30.5 in the final four. "Possessing the ball means something to the defense -- it means snaps taken away," Payton said. "When we finished the regular season and went to Philadelphia for the Wild Card round, we were able to point to 186 less defensive plays (than 2012) which is more than two games." With Drew Brees and Marques Colston aging, and Darren Sproles gone, the old high-flying Saints offense is a thing of the past. Look for Khiry Robinson and Mark Ingram's roles to increase significantly in 2014, particularly Robinson's.

Thoughts, opinions? If I were a fan, I would want a wide open offense so long as Drew Brees is quarterback.

We need to upgrade Oline first and foremost. I like DLP. But if we had a dominant center we would have the best interior in the league.

will also be possibly breaking in a new starter at right tackle, don't know if Strief will return yet.

Terron Armstead only has 4 starts under his belt at left tackle but 2 of those were playoff games.

Drew is always looking to take a shot down the field, but I agree that we need more ball control. We've shown that when we control the T.O.P. and don't commit stupid turnovers, we are unstoppable. A balanced attack won't make Drew stop throwing deep when we get a man open, so I'm all for it.

I feel like this team will benefit from having a more balanced offense with a power rushing attack. Drew can work wonders with play action if the opposing team is respecting the run (something we don't see often). Your point about keeping the offense wide open with Brees is valid, but I think they want to prolong his career by reducing the amount of times he's going to have to sling the ball, which goes hand in hand with the amount of hits he will take. Less hits, less throws.. Longer career. He is still very capable of slinging it, and will be asked to do so, but hopefully not as much.

Personally it feels a lot more dangerous to be balanced with an elite QB who can make elite throws at any time regardless.

100% agree. If we can consistently pick up 4-5 yards a carry on the ground, It will work wonders all around. Our play action will be better, our defense will stay off the field longer, and Drew won't take as many hits. Not to mention, we will be able to score more on the ground and won't have our QB tied for most rushing touchdowns on the team.

It's all relative. Last year we hardly ran the ball for most of the year. It was killing us on the road.

We do need to be less predictable with our personnel.

A successful run game is everything for our offense. Just look at 2009 and 2011, our season rushing total as a team was over 2000 yards both times and we were dominate. In fact, in 2011 the ONLY 4 losses we had were the only games we failed to rush for 100 yards. (Atlanta was the one exception that we won).

2008, 10, 12, 13, respectively were all under 1600 yards. There's obviously a pattern - defenses aside. You can throw out 12 because Payton didn't coach. Our YPC were 4.0 or lower in each other season. 09 & 11 we were 4.5 & 4.9 .

We are so dominate at home because our passing game relies so heavily on perfect timing and consistency. And playing in perfect 70 degree weather with no wind or crowd problems makes it easy. Take those perfect conditions away, especially with outside road games, and you have to be able to run, as the elements will have impacts on your ability to be perfect. You have to be balanced in order to have greater unpredictability to allow greater room for error in the passing game.........

Too bad we won't have the personnel this year to win the Super Bowl.

Desperately. It was very frustrating at times last season.

Exactly. It's great to see this honestly because it sounds like Payton realizes exactly what needs to be done. This team was really just being more consistent on offense away from playing in at least the NFC chanpionship

I think we'll eventually see the shift to a more run-based, play-action offense. Why? Because it would mean we keep Brees longer.

3-4 years from now, Brees won't have the arm he once had, and we won't be able to keep going wide open. When that happens, you roll the dice... either you get another QB and hope he's somewhere near as good as Brees WAS, or you change the offense to fit what Brees can still do.

Just my opinion, but I think Drew could still win a Super Bowl at age 40, if he's in the "crafty field general" mode (like Elway was near the end, when he got 2 championships).

In a perfect world we

1. Get a 1st and possibly a 2nd for Grahama

2. Select the best CB/S with our new 1st rounder

3. Select Mosely if available with our original 1st round pick or best CB/S available (whichever we didn't take with our top pick)

4. Select WR with our new 2nd

5. Select best available center with our old 2nd

6. Select Mason or Hill with our 3rd

Transition into a smash mouth, play-action football team with a salty defense and cap room to sign our young studs.

Would be nice to see defenses start to bite on Drew's play action again... Probably the most obvious fake handoff in the league.
