1. I am looking for a shrub or small tree that will do well in a very shady area. I was thinking evergreen but I am not committed to that.
2. Is there a variety of grass seed that will do ok in a shady area? It gets filtered sunlight but is largely shady. I don't think I am willing to fork out the $ for sod in this area (around 1000 sqft).

Shrub: Indian Hawthorne; Pineapple Guava if you want something larger and flowering.
2. There is a new shade tolerant form of St. Augustine, but it is sod only.

I don't know how big of an area you're talking about seeding.
You can always cover the ground with clean pine straw and make a bed out of it.Plant what shrubs, plants, etc. that you want.
