Need help with an ipad issue

My wifes I pad hasn't been backed up or updated in over a year. Her email got hacked and she had to change and that old email and password is attached to this ipad. Is there a way to scrub this ipad and allow her to update and use her new email address?

It says no software updates available. This thing is on version 5.1.1. How do I get the updated software version?

I'd get newest I tunes and see if perhaps that helps.

can you plug into your laptop so it can sync with itunes? usually itunes automatically searches for updates for the devices.

5.1.1 is the last iOS update for iPad 1. LINK

It is an ipad 1. Alot of the apps don't work anymore because of this.
