I've owned 2 trucks: a 92 F150 and an 05 Ranger. In the market for a new truck and I don't have the need for another full sized pickup since I'm living in BR now and my commute is a whopping 7 miles. I do however want to keep the utility of a pickup and gas mileage of my old Ranger.

Started looking around on the net and there's none to be found except for Tacoma's. WTF? No s10's, no Rangers, nothing from the American manufacturers. With gas prices being as high as ever I figured the market would have kept that demand up. What gives?

???

I went from a 98 4cyl Ranger to a 07 V8 F150. Absolutely no difference in gas mileage.

IMO the current gas mileage differences don't justify buying a small truck ,but with current technology you would think they would develop a ranger that should be able to get 30mpg. I do know Chevy just released a new Colorado but not sure of the details.

The new compact Chevy and GMC's will be out in the fall. They look nice. I might get one.

Toyota drove everybody out, pretty much.

However, I think it is coming back - Global Ranger is coming in to try to compete with the Tacoma.

I'm a Toyota guy, but I'm intrigued - Ford would be my American brand.

I consider the loss of the Dakota to be the greatest American tragedy.

The Toyota Tacoma is more expensive than the tundra. People want the Tacoma.

For me, it's about the cost of the truck. Full size pickups have sold out, and are damn minivans. Not to mention the Ford's have a retail price of 40k+. I don't need navigation in my truck, it's a truck. Give me a straight shift, cloth seats, and the power to haul shite.

My bigger complaint about trucks right now is that it seems there is no in-between. Meaning it's all or absolutely nothing as far as trim levels. Maybe it's just that every new truck I see these days has nav, leather,B/U cameras, etc.

My 2010 Ram with the Hemi gets about the same mpg as my 2000 Dakota with a 3.9 V6. But you're right. Most small-midsized trucks are gone. The Colorado is supposed to come back some time in the next few years.

it's supposed to be back in 2015 with a small diesel.

Small trucks need small diesels IMO. And I mean very small diesels.

Ford only sells the Ranger overseas now. The F-150 is priced so closely to the Ranger the sales plummeted.

I looked at the Dakota when I bought my Ram. An equally equipped Dakota was only $4K-5K less than the Ram after rebates. It was a no brainer to get the bigger truck. And it helped that the angled redesign of the Dakota was horrible.

As others mentioned GMC and Chevy will be releasing new versions of the Canyon and the Colorado later this year. Next year's model will then offer a small Duramax diesel option as well.

That's the one I'm waiting on. I'd like to get the Canyon in a crew cab 4x4 configuration with the mini-duramax. That would be the perfect truck for me. I have no need for a fullsize and that would be all I need for towing and outdoor activities.
