Anyone notice how loud a few of the commercials are on ME TV?

I like to watch Gilligan and Hogan's Heros among a few other shows on ME TV but there are some commercials that blare at double the volume it seems. They make me jump every single time they come on they're so damn loud.

I sent them a message via their web page and read up on the FCC guidelines on filing a complaint. I need to record the date/time, commercial product (student loan bullshite), etc.

I'm ready with a pad of paper and a pen next time it happens.

Commercials are often made to play at a louder volume because they know people often leave the room when they come on and making them louder is their way of trying to make sure you are still hearing them even if you are not seeing them.

I remember when my Dad and then-fricking step-mom watched Texas Ranger on USA in the afternoons, they'd have to mute the commercials because of how loud it got. Hasn't changed I see.

That may be true to some extent and a slight increase in volume isn't a problem. In this case the volume is almost double the normal volume and would startle anyone. I found this at the FCC website (fcc.gov):
quote:

Effective December 13, 2012, the FCC's rules require television commercial advertisements to have the same average volume as the programs that they accompany. The FCC established these rules to comply with the directive of Congress contained in the Commercial Advertisement Loudness Mitigation (CALM) Act (PDF).

It depends on how they define 'average' - I think they just take half of the loudest sound and call that the 'average.'

Of course the loudest could be a gunshot or a dish dropped on a tile floor and then they play their commercial at half that sound, which is probably two or three times the 'normal' conversational sound level of the program.
